The Boston Red Sox are now being linked to Massachusetts teenage pitching phenom Brody Bumila, a 6-foot-9 lefty already touching 100 mph.

The 18-year-old senior at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Massachusetts, has committed to pitch college ball for the Texas Longhorns, but that commitment figures to be tested by a first-round draft bonus that Baseball America projects at $4,695,500 in slot value. Bumila’s draft stock has exploded nationally after the Bishop Feehan standout delivered a 20-strikeout no-hitter while touching triple digits, prompting growing speculation that the Red Sox could seriously consider keeping the Massachusetts native near home in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Boston holds the 20th overall selection in the July 11 draft, and Bumila is currently projected to land within striking distance of that slot, according to three major mock drafts. Boston.com‘s Hayden Bird rounded up the projections: Baseball America places Bumila 18th overall to the Cincinnati Reds, while both The Athletic and MLB Pipeline slot him 21st, to the San Diego Padres. The Red Sox, picking at 20, sit directly between those projections.

Red Sox Draft Position in Line to Land Bumila

The tight clustering reflects the surge in Bumila’s national profile, after he reportedly added an eye-popping 9 mph to his fastball in the 2024 season, his sophomore year, according to the scouting site Perfect Game. He has accumulated 69 strikeouts in just 27 innings this spring, a rate that borders on video-game territory even for a high school hurler.

The last Massachusetts left-hander to generate a high level of pre-draft buzz was Thomas White, who signed with the Miami Marlins as the 35th overall pick in 2023. White, now 21, is rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 1 prospect in the Marlins system and No. 11 overall in baseball. The Marlins signed White with an above-slot $4.1 million bonus, a record for any New England-based player.

But talent evaluators believe Bumila is set to break that record, and that his arsenal anchored by what scouts rate as an 80-grade fastball places him higher on the board than White’s selection. According to Baseball America, a grade of 80 means that Bumila’s fastball is “top of the scale.”

Bumila’s 20-K No-No Raised Red Sox Draft Profile

Bumila’s name entered the national conversation after he delivered one of the most dominant individual performances of any 2026 draft prospect. With his 6-foot-9 frame, the southpaw generates 19-20 inches of induced vertical break on his fastball, a figure that would rank near the top of major league leaderboards, according to MLB.com‘s Allison Mast. The no-hitter shattered a 60-year-old school strikeout record.

Bumila missed his entire junior season recovering from an internal brace procedure on his pitching elbow to reinforce the ulnar collateral ligament, but returned at full strength for his senior year. His coach, Joe Breen, told MassLive‘s Lauren Campbell that Bumila’s mentality separates him from other elite arms.

“He’s just a competitor, all he cares about is winning,” Breen said, as quoted by Campbell. “To him it’s not what did he hit on the radar gun, it’s if the other guys swung and missed.”

The 2026 draft class has been defined by volatility in its middle tier. MLB Pipeline‘s Jim Callis calls the upcoming draft class one in which consensus evaporates after the top six names, and where high school pitchers with Bumila’s ceiling will have openings to climb before July. Baseball America‘s Carlos Collazo noted that while Bumila carries substantial risk given his limited prep track record, organizations may be willing to absorb that risk, viewing him as a potential top-10 talent in the class.

Two months remain before the Red Sox go on the clock in Philadelphia. Whether Boston opts to keep this particular Massachusetts arm at home is not completely in its control, but if he is available at No. 20, the intrigue around Bumila will only grow more intense.
