Bucks Bring in Coach With Caveat That Will Cost Them Giannis

The Milwaukee Bucks have finally hired Taylor Jenkins as the new head coach after weeks of speculation. But the process for making the choice could cost them their franchise star.

After weeks of speculation, the Milwaukee Bucks are finalizing a deal to hire Taylor Jenkins as the franchise’s next head coach. On the surface, it’s a strong, logical move. Jenkins was widely viewed as one of the top available names on the market, bringing a proven track record of player development, defensive structure, and culture building from his six-year run with the Memphis Grizzlies.

But for as much as this hire stabilizes Milwaukee’s direction on paper, it comes with a caveat that could define the franchise’s immediate future and potentially cost them their franchise star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Bucks Are Disconnected From Giannis

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Bucks made this decision without meaningful involvement from their franchise cornerstone, a reality that only reinforces the growing divide between Giannis and the organization.

“I’m not aware of any involvement from Giannis in this search process. This was something that the Bucks genuinely led…my understanding is that there’s been zero communication between these two sides since the deadline as far as Giannis and the organization’s top brass.”

That quote doesn’t just highlight a lack of collaboration. It points to a fractured relationship at the worst possible time.

Milwaukee isn’t operating from a position of strength. The Bucks finished a disappointing 32-50 season, ranked near the bottom of the league in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and are now headed to the draft lottery for the first time since 2016. Layer in the reported internal tension, a lingering knee situation, and a lack of postseason success since 2022, and the situation becomes even more fragile.

Hiring Taylor Jenkins may address schematic and developmental concerns, but it doesn’t address the core issue: trust.

Bringing in Taylor Jenkins Might Not Move the Needle

Jenkins’ resume suggests he’s capable of guiding either direction Milwaukee chooses. In Memphis, he built a young roster into a playoff team, posting a 250-214 record while emphasizing defense, rebounding, and possession control. That adaptability makes him an ideal fit for a team caught between retooling and rebuilding.

If Giannis stays, Jenkins has experience building systems around a star, as he did with Ja Morant. If Giannis leaves, Jenkins has already proven he can oversee a youth movement and accelerate development. That flexibility is exactly why Milwaukee targeted him early. But flexibility doesn’t guarantee retention.

All signs continue to point toward an inevitable crossroads with Antetokounmpo. The lack of communication since the trade deadline, combined with his absence from a decision this significant, signals a disconnect that a coaching hire alone is unlikely to repair. In fact, it may do the opposite.

By moving forward without Giannis’ input, the Bucks may have unintentionally clarified their direction and accelerated his timeline to make a decision about his future. The emerging news that Antetokounmpo may view the Phoenix Suns as preferred landing spot in a trade only further fuels that worry.

Taylor Jenkins gives Milwaukee credibility and structure moving forward. What he doesn’t guarantee is the one thing that matters most. Keeping Giannis Antetokounmpo in a Bucks uniform.
