Alex Cora is a free agent after being let go by the Boston Red Sox. One particular NL East team could be an option soon.
On Saturday, the Boston Red Sox made a surprising move, firing four coaches after their 10-17 start to the season, including manager Alex Cora. The now-former Red Sox skipper led the team to a World Series title in 2018 and led the Red Sox to two more postseason appearances.
Because of Cora’s success early in his tenure with Boston, he shouldn’t be unemployed for long. In fact, a lot of teams are really struggling as of now, and they may ultimately find themselves in the market for a new manager soon.
The New York Mets have been struggling quite badly as well. They are 9-19, which is tied for the worst record in Major League Baseball. Current manager Carlos Mendoza could soon find himself on the hot seat if he hasn’t already. Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report named New York as a possible fit for Cora, assuming they end up firing Mendoza.
“While Carlos Mendoza led the team to the National League Championship Series in his first year in 2024, New York disappointed in 2025 by missing the playoffs entirely and has looked nothing like a playoff team in 2026 to this point,” Polacek writes.
“Given the payroll, the front office may not have much patience. And the biggest move it could make in the short term is making a managerial change.”
Mets Tabbed as Possible Alex Cora Fit
Cora would be an interesting fit for the Mets. Mendoza may have gotten them to the NLCS in 2024, but they fell short in six games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and they were in a good position for most of last season before the collapse began that took them out of the playoff hunt.
Those struggles have carried over into 2026, and it’s clear that the Mets are losing ground and doing so quickly. Cora has a championship under his belt from his days in Boston, so he certainly wouldn’t be a bad fit for the Mets.
If he can handle the big market of Boston, he should be able to handle New York as well. In addition, the Mets have a lot of talent on their roster, including Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean and Bo Bichette.
Perhaps just a change in leadership will help them get back on track and back into the postseason race. Cora has the experience necessary for a turnaround, and that might be all that the Mets need as they try to overcome their slow start.
Cora Could Be Perfect Fit for Mets
The early season struggles of the Mets may prove that Mendoza might not be the right man for the job in New York, which is why making a move to hire Cora would not be a bad idea.
He has the tools necessary to turn a struggling team around, and even managed to do it last year with the Red Sox. Perhaps a change of scenery could be all he needs to get back on track and return to his winning ways.
We’ll see if the Mets decide to make a move.
