Denny Hamlin won the 2026 NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover Motor Speedway on Sunday night, but the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran still left the track frustrated. Hamlin dominated the NASCAR All-Star Race by leading 103 laps and beating teammate Chase Briscoe in the closing laps to secure the $1 million prize.

The victory marked his second career NASCAR All-Star Race win and continued his strong run at Dover Motor Speedway, where he has now won three straight NASCAR Cup Series races, including points events. Still, Hamlin made it clear after the race that the result left him with mixed emotions because the NASCAR All-Star Race does not count toward official NASCAR Cup Series win totals.

The 45-year-old NASCAR veteran also delivered an honest update about retirement and why he does not want to race past his prime.

Denny Hamlin Frustrated after NASCAR All-Star Race Win

Denny Hamlin celebrated the NASCAR All-Star Race victory with his Joe Gibbs Racing team in Victory Lane, but his tone quickly changed during the post-race press conference.

When reporters asked Hamlin how the win fit into his NASCAR legacy, he admitted the situation still bothers him.

“This one doesn’t count. It’s bullshit, Hamlin said, laughing.

The NASCAR All-Star Race remains one of NASCAR’s biggest exhibition events, but the win does not count toward official NASCAR Cup Series statistics. Hamlin said that reality has followed him throughout his career.

“That’s my career. All the wins that really matter don’t count. It matters to the bank account or the legacy. It’s cool. It’ll go on your résumé when they’re debating whether to put you in or not. But it doesn’t go on the stat sheet.”

Hamlin officially remains at 61 NASCAR Cup Series victories despite controlling most of the NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover Motor Speedway.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver recovered from a qualifying spin earlier in the weekend to start from the pole position. He stayed out front for most of the race while several top drivers crashed out during the chaotic early stages.

Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott were among the drivers caught up in multi-car incidents as cautions repeatedly slowed the race. Hamlin avoided the trouble and held off Chase Briscoe by less than a second in the final laps.

“It makes it a lot easier when you’ve got a car this fast. We strive to be No. 1, and we did it today.”

Denny Hamlin’s Retirement Comments Create a NASCAR Debate

Denny Hamlin’s retirement talk became another major story after the NASCAR All-Star Race ended at Dover Motor Speedway.

The NASCAR veteran has repeatedly said he wants to retire while still competing at a high level, rather than remain in the NASCAR Cup Series as his performance declines.

“I want to finish like this. My ego will not allow me to be mediocre.”

The comments highlighted the difficult reality facing many veteran NASCAR drivers late in their careers. While some former stars struggled in their final seasons, Hamlin continues to run near the front in the NASCAR Cup Series standings.

At 45 years old, Hamlin remains one of the strongest drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series garage. Along with racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, he also serves as co-owner of 23XI Racing.

Joe Gibbs Racing co-owner Heather Gibbs recently praised Hamlin’s leadership and experience. She described meetings with Hamlin as a “master class” for younger drivers, including Ty Gibbs.

NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover Motor Speedway Sparks Reaction

The NASCAR All-Star Race format at Dover Motor Speedway also sparked debate across the NASCAR garage.

The event featured stage breaks and inversion rules that shuffled the field and led to aggressive racing early on. Several crashes followed before the race settled into a long green-flag battle near the front.

After the NASCAR All-Star Race ended, Hamlin said Dover Motor Speedway deserves another regular NASCAR Cup Series points race because of the track’s unique layout and challenging surface.

Hamlin also shared a personal moment after the win. He joked that the $1 million in prize money would help buy furniture for his mother’s house after his father’s passing last year.

Even though the NASCAR All-Star Race victory will not officially count in the record books, Hamlin once again proved he remains one of the top drivers in NASCAR as retirement moves closer.
