Tony Vitello Earns First Win in Giants-Dodgers Rivalry

The San Francisco Giants and Tony Vitello made Major League Baseball history after he jumped straight from the college ranks to the MLB. Tonight, he earned a signature victory in the Giants’ historic rivalry over the Dodgers

The Giants narrowly beat the Dodgers 3-1 in the opening game of a three-game home series. And Giants fans should hope that it is a sign of many more to come for Vitello.

Vitello Gets a Taste of the Giants-Dodgers Rivalry

The game delivered moments of anxiousness for Giants players, coaches, and fans. The Giants jumped out to an early lead after scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning against Yoshinobu Yamamoto. But Yamamoto and the Dodgers’ bullpen shut out the Giants for the rest of the game.

The Dodgers cut the lead to 3-1 after starting pitcher Landen Roupp walked four batters with only 1 out in the 4th inning. An inning-ending double play helped settle the nerves of many. The opportunistic Dodgers’ offense was held to just the 1 run.

Tony Vitello pulled Roupp after the 5th inning. From the 6th inning on, Vitello had to manage a bullpen that had their ups and downs throughout the season. The Giants’ bullpen delivered for their rookie manager. They allowed only 2 hits over 4 shutout innings to secure the victory.

Vitello Addresses the Rivalry Atmosphere

The Giants’ manager spent the last 8 seasons as the head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers. He helped the Volunteers win their first College World Series in 2024. With Tennessee being in a power conference like the SEC, Vitello has experience with sellout crowds and what it means to beat your rival.

But it felt different for Vitello this time around.

“It was a different vibe from the get-go,” Vitello said postgame. “You look up by the time we’re hitting, and it’s a playoff-type atmosphere.”

Vitello also addressed what beating the Dodgers to open up the series means for the Giants.

“It gives you permission to be confident,” Vitello said. “Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan… those guys don’t need the win column or statistics or permission to be confident. It’s an undying thing. That’s ideal.”

What’s Next for the Giants

Tony Vitello and the Giants have now won 4 of the last 5 games after struggling early in the season. They currently sit 4th in the NL West standings and have a 10-13 record. The Dodgers and Padres are tied for the division lead with a 16-7 record.

San Francisco will look to gain a couple of games back against their rival, the Dodgers. The Giants will start Tyler Mahle against Shohei Ohtani in the second game of the series before closing it out with Logan Webb against Tyler Glasnow.
