The Detroit Tigers never promised Tarik Skubal would return quickly from elbow surgery.

Scott Boras did.

That distinction has quietly become one of the biggest storylines surrounding Detroit’s season.

While the Tigers continue speaking cautiously about their ace’s recovery, Boras has pushed a much more optimistic narrative publicly. The super-agent has framed the procedure as minor and manageable instead of something that could create long-term concern.

The messaging shift matters for a very obvious reason.

Skubal is preparing to enter one of the most important free-agent markets in baseball.

The second the phrase “elbow surgery” appeared in headlines, executives around the league started reevaluating risk. Teams immediately began questioning durability, long-term health, and future contract value.

That reality changed the conversation overnight.

Skubal is not just another injured pitcher trying to return this season. He is a two-time Cy Young winner expected to command one of the largest contracts available this winter.

That explains why Boras entered the public discussion so aggressively.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Boras appeared on “Baseball Tonight” and described Skubal’s surgery almost like a routine medical procedure instead of a significant elbow operation.

The agent emphasized that Dr. Neal ElAttrache used a NanoScope during the surgery, which Boras claimed dramatically reduced how invasive the process became.

He even joked about calling it “a Skubal scope.”

“This is really almost like receiving a shot,” Boras said.

That quote immediately changed the perception around the injury.

Many fans initially feared Skubal could miss several months or potentially face lingering concerns later in the season. Boras instead presented the recovery almost like a short interruption.

Modern sports medicine absolutely supports the idea that some procedures now require shorter rehab timelines. Less invasive surgeries have helped pitchers recover more quickly in recent years.

Still, Boras also has more financial motivation than anyone else involved to keep the situation sounding positive.

That part cannot be overlooked.

If rival teams begin viewing Skubal’s elbow issue as something more serious than a cleanup procedure, it could affect negotiations worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Every optimistic update helps preserve leverage, encouraging timeline protects value, and reassuring quotes shape perception.

That is why Boras continuing to drive the public optimism feels strategic.

Detroit has handled the situation much differently from the start.

When the Tigers first announced Skubal needed surgery to remove a loose body from his elbow, the organization avoided attaching firm recovery dates to the process.

Team officials repeatedly stressed they would know more after the surgery and once Skubal progressed through rehab.

That careful language stood out immediately.

The reporting surrounding the timeline then started changing rapidly.

Early speculation suggested Skubal could miss time beyond the All-Star break. Shortly afterward, new reports surfaced suggesting even a two-month absence might be considered conservative.

Some optimism now points toward a possible return in early June.

The dramatic swing created confusion for many Tigers fans.

As FanSided’s Emma Lingan writes, ESPN’s latest reporting only reinforced what many people already suspected. Most of the aggressive optimism surrounding Skubal’s recovery has originated from Boras rather than Detroit itself.

That does not automatically make the updates inaccurate.

There is reportedly genuine optimism inside the clubhouse that Skubal could return sooner than expected. Detroit desperately needs positive news after injuries battered the roster during the opening weeks of the season.

At the same time, the Tigers clearly understand the danger of creating unrealistic expectations.

Hope is useful for morale.

Certainty creates pressure.

That explains why Detroit continues speaking carefully while Boras continues projecting confidence publicly.

Until Skubal returns to a major league mound, Tigers fans will likely place more trust in the organization’s medical updates than the optimism coming from an agent protecting the value of a future megadeal.
