The New York Mets are likely to pursue yet another trade in the near future. New York previously made four significant deals in the offseason ahead of the 2026 season. Acquiring star pitcher Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers for multiple prospects was their biggest deal of the winter.

The series of moves, along with spending nearly $250 million in free agency, essentially revamped the Mets roster. Nevertheless, New York still has problems. While they entered 2026 with high hopes, the Mets recently lost 12 consecutive games. Injuries have certainly hurt the club, particularly on offense, but New York has been one of the worst-hitting teams in all of baseball this season. In fact, their 3.52 runs per game currently ranks 29th in the league.

In need of a boost, The Athletic’s Tim Britton and Will Sammon are reporting that the Mets may very well target another trade. As the duo points out, New York does have an excess of starting pitching to help facilitate a deal. At the moment, the club currently has seven or eight typical starters on the team. This includes using veterans David Peterson and Sean Manaea out of the bullpen.

Because of this surplus and the struggling offense, Britton and Sammon believe a trade may be on the horizon. “The presence of all that starting pitching — and starting pitching that can’t easily be sent down to the minors — could hint at an eventual trade,” writes the duo. “It’s hard to do that sort of thing in April: Few teams have seen enough of their current roster to believe it merits that swift a change.”

New York Mets Linked With Several Trades for Star Hitters

While big April trades are fairly rare in baseball, New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has made early moves in the past. During his time with the Brewers, Stearns was able to acquire star shortstop Willy Adames from the Tampa Bay Rays in May 2021. The infielder later earned MVP votes before joining the San Francisco Giants.

The Mets have been linked with some significant trades in recent weeks to help out their struggling offense. New York was recently named a top potential landing spot for Houston Astros star slugger Yordan Alvarez. They could also become suitors for his teammate, Isaac Paredes. As Jim Bowden recently reported, Houston is likely looking for additional starting pitchers and prospects.

Rays slugger Yandy Diaz has also been linked with a potential move to the Big Apple. Sports Illustrated’s Ryan Shea recently posted a mock trade that saw the veteran join the Mets for two prominent prospects. Diaz is typically deployed as a first baseman or designated hitter, and New York has issues in these particular roles.

New York’s Offense has Been Better as of Late

Stearns and the New York Mets will likely see if the club can quickly turn things around before making a massive decision. After losing a dozen consecutive games, New York has won back-to-back games. The turnaround comes as superstar Juan Soto returned from a recent calf injury. With the outfielder in the starting lineup, the Mets are 6-4 on the season.

The Mets recently exploded for 10 runs against the Minnesota Twins on April 23. It was just the third time this season that New York scored double-digit runs, and the first time in three weeks.
