The NFL has officially revealed one of the first major prime-time matchups of the 2026 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos will face off Sept. 14 in the league’s first “Monday Night Football” game of the season.

The location of the AFC West showdown will be announced when the NFL releases the complete 2026 regular-season schedule on Thursday.

The matchup arrives after Denver ended Kansas City’s nine-year reign atop the AFC West during the 2025 season.

The game will also spotlight one of the biggest storylines heading into the new year: whether Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be ready to return from the knee injury that ended his 2025 campaign.

Mahomes suffered tears to both his ACL and LCL in his left knee during the final minutes of a Dec. 14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Despite the injury, Mahomes has repeatedly said his goal is to return in time for Week 1.

Patrick Mahomes Reportedly ‘Ahead of Schedule’ in Recovery

Momentum surrounding Mahomes’ recovery has continued to build throughout the offseason.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach recently said the quarterback is “way ahead of schedule” during rehab, according to USA Today.

Veach also emphasized Mahomes’ commitment to recovery.

“He’s in our building every single day,” Veach said. “Even when he goes away… he takes one of our trainers with him.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid echoed that optimism during rookie minicamp, explaining that Mahomes could potentially participate in organized team activities later this month, although the team may limit his workload.

The Chiefs appear focused on balancing Mahomes’ desire to return quickly with a cautious recovery plan.

Veach acknowledged that any restrictions during training camp would likely involve “protecting [Mahomes] against himself.”

Mahomes also provided a positive update in March when he shared video footage of himself dropping back and throwing passes roughly 100 days after surgery.

The quarterback was wearing a brace on his left leg while working out indoors, marking one of the clearest signs yet that he had advanced into football-specific movement during rehab.

Earlier this year, Mahomes made it clear that Week 1 remains his target date.

“I wanna be ready for Week 1,” Mahomes said. “That’s my goal… to play in that Week 1 and have no restrictions.”

Broncos & Chiefs Enter 2026 With AFC West Momentum

The Week 1 “Monday Night Football” matchup will also feature another quarterback returning from injury.

Bo Nix is expected to be ready for Broncos training camp after suffering a broken bone in his right ankle during the AFC playoffs Jan. 18.

Nix missed Denver’s season-ending loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Denver enters the season with momentum after capturing the AFC West title in 2025 and ending Kansas City’s long streak atop the division.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, spent the offseason making several roster and coaching adjustments as they prepare for another playoff push once Mahomes returns.

NFL Reveals More Prime-Time Games Ahead of Full Schedule Release

The Chiefs-Broncos announcement was one of several marquee games revealed Monday during television network upfront presentations.

The Dallas Cowboys were also part of two separate announcements.

Dallas will visit the New York Giants during the first “Sunday Night Football” game of the season, Sept. 13, before hosting the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving Day.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills will host the Detroit Lions Sept. 17 in the first regular-season game at the Bills’ new stadium, which will also launch Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” schedule.

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will open the season Sept. 9 when the team unveils its championship banner.

The NFL has not yet announced Seattle’s opponent.

The full NFL schedule will be released on May 14.
