Tigers Named Top Landing Spot for Phillies Star Bryce Harper

The Detroit Tigers will be looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the trade deadline. Detroit entered the 2026 season with high hopes. After all, they were among the last eight teams remaining in the 2025 playoffs and added star pitcher Framber Valdez to the rotation. The acquisition was certainly needed as the Tigers were far too reliant on superstar pitcher Tarik Skubal.

So far this season, the Valdez move has paid off. Detroit’s top two starters have a combined 3.01 ERA over 14 starts, creating one of the best one-two punches in Major League Baseball. Overall, the Tigers’ pitching staff ranks eighth in runs allowed per game (4.16) and tenth in ERA (3.96).

While the team’s pitching has been solid, the Tigers have somewhat struggled at the plate. In fact, their 4.44 runs scored per game and 33 total home runs are both right around the league’s average. As a result, Detroit should be looking for quality hitters in the trade market over the next couple of months.

One of the most prominent sluggers who could soon become available is Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper. Philadelphia has struggled to start the current campaign and recently fired its manager. At the moment, the Phillies have the worst run differential (-45) in the entire league. Assuming this slide continues, Harper could very well become available in the market. If so, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer believes the Tigers would be the best fit for the slugger.

Detroit Tigers Could Use Bryce Harper in Their Lineup

GettyBryce Harper is widely regarded as one of the best hitters of his generation.

Harper’s future in Philadelphia has been in question for months now. Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski fueled the speculation last fall by hinting that Harper was no longer elite. It is safe to say that the star did not appreciate the comments. Harper even admitted he was “hurt” and “uncomfortable” due to the remark. While the two sides eased the tension heading into 2026, Dombrowski recently admitted he has already had trade talks with other clubs.

Rymer particularly pointed to the Detroit Tigers in the potential race for Harper for several reasons. For starters, Detroit could use an influx of offense at first base/designated hitter. Spencer Torkelson has, so far, put up average numbers for the Tigers at first base in 2026. Detroit’s DHs have also posted subpar power stats throughout the campaign.

Detroit should be in win-now mode due to Skubal’s precarious situation as well. The superstar pitcher is set to be a free agent after the season, and could leave the Tigers. Potentially adding Harper would show the fans that they are not wasting his advantageous opportunity.

Detroit Would Owe Harper a Ton of Money

The biggest hurdle for the Detroit Tigers in the pursuit of Harper would be his contract. The slugger previously signed a massive 13-year, $330 million deal with the Phillies. As a result, he is still owed over $150 million through the 2031 season. The Tigers have been careful not to reach the first luxury-tax threshold in recent years, something that they would breach if they acquired Harper.

Nevertheless, Detroit should be looking to take advantage of being in arguably the worst division in baseball. The A.L. Central is currently the only MLB division without a winning team. Adding Harper would cement the Tigers as the top contender in the Central. Detroit also has a plethora of top prospects to facilitate a major trade. MLB.com recently ranked the team as having the fifth-best prospect pool in the league.
