The Minnesota Vikings and young quarterback J.J. McCarthy are facing a very uncertain future together.

Last offseason, the franchise made the aggressive decision to pass on bringing in a veteran quarterback. They handed the keys of the team over to McCarthy.

When the decision was made, there was a lot of concern. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a knee injury suffered in preseason action. Throwing him to the wolves without even practice experience was a major risk.

McCarthy showed flashes of potential throughout the 2025 season. Unfortunately, he struggled with injuries and his play on the field was subpar. That led to the Vikings deciding to sign former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray in free agency.

Now, there is a very real chance that McCarthy’s time with Minnesota has already come to an end.

Another Concerning Update About Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy Emerges

Since the beginning of the offseason, the Vikings and McCarthy have faced a lot of media attention. The overwhelming expectation is that Murray will win the starting job.

However, Minnesota also chose to re-sign veteran signal caller Carson Wentz. There is no guarantee that McCarthy will even be the primary backup for the Vikings.

Keeping that in mind, NFL.com analyst Kevin Patra has weighed in with a concerning outlook for McCarthy’s future with the team.

“The assumption is that Murray signed to be the starter, and little we’ve heard suggests otherwise,” Patra wrote. “But we need to see the QBs on the field to cement that belief. The future of J.J. McCarthy is the big question. Will he push Murray? Will he wash out and even be leapfrogged by Carson Wentz?”

Patra continued on, noting that Minnesota’s offseason moves has hinted that the team is no longer confident in McCarthy’s ability.

“Kevin O’Connell has always spoken positively about McCarthy, but the Vikings’ offseason actions in the QB room tell a different story.”

Rumors of a Potential J.J. McCarthy Trade Continue Swirling

Even before the Murray signing, there were rumors about the Vikings potentially trading McCarthy. Those rumors are still coming out.

At the end of the day, McCarthy could very well end up being a trade chip. Minnesota signed Murray with the intention of giving him a chance to win the job. If he does so and the Vikings roll with Wentz as the backup, McCarthy will likely become available.

Should that scenario become a reality, there are quite a few teams across the NFL who would likely have interest in the young quarterback.

During the 2025 season, McCarthy ended up playing in 10 games. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while also running for 181 yards and four more touchdowns.

McCarthy is just 23 years old with plenty of time to get his career back on track. The reality of the situation is that he might have to do that somewhere other than Minnesota.
