Payton Pritchard, Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics had every reason to expect resistance Sunday night in Philadelphia. Joel Embiid was back. The Philadelphia 76ers were at home. The series had already created enough tension to make Game 4 feel like something more than another road playoff game.

Then Boston took the drama out of it.

The Celtics beat the 76ers 128-96, took a 3-1 series lead, and moved within one win of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Jayson Tatum dropped 30. Jaylen Brown gave Boston another steady two-way night. The Celtics hit 24 threes and controlled the glass.

But the temperature of the game changed because of the smallest player on the floor.

Payton Pritchard Sends Message After Celtics Win

Payton Pritchard had a career night in Game 4.

Pritchard hit six threes, scored 32 points, and added enough playmaking to keep Philadelphia chasing him all night. It was the kind of playoff performance that can swing a road building. It was his career high in the playoffs.

That is what made his postgame message stand out. After the win, Pritchard spoke about what his rise means for players who look at him and see someone closer to their own size than the usual NBA prototype.

“I feel like I give hope to everybody that is the same size as me… With hard work you can make it a long way, and I’m a prime example of that,” Pritchard said.

That line carried more weight after the night he had.

Pritchard is not supposed to dominate playoff games by the usual NBA logic. He is not the biggest guard. He is not the most physically imposing player on the floor. That has never stopped him.

For Pritchard, the message was simple, and Game 4 was the latest example.

Joe Mazzulla Praises Pritchard’s Journey

Joe Mazzulla has watched that growth from close range.

Pritchard’s role has changed more than once since he entered the NBA. He has started. He has come off the bench. He has had stretches where his minutes were clear and others where he had to wait for opportunities. That can break some players.

It did not break Pritchard.

After Game 4, Mazzulla pointed to the traits that have allowed Pritchard to keep moving forward through the changes.

“He’s been on a journey since he’s gotten to the NBA. He’s started, he’s not started, he’s come off the bench… but throughout it, he’s kept a level of professionalism, consistency, mental toughness,” Mazzulla said.

Celtics Can Close it Out in Game 5

Pritchard changed the temperature of the game before Philadelphia could settle. His shot-making gave Boston separation, but his impact was not limited to open threes. He forced Philadelphia to defend another problem, not just survive Boston’s stars.

Tatum still finished with 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 11 assists. Brown added 20 points and 7 rebounds. Boston’s stars eventually made their imprint. But Pritchard gave the Celtics the cushion that allowed the game to open up.

Now the series shifts back to TD Garden.

Boston has a 3-1 lead and a chance to close out Philadelphia in Game 5. Embiid is expected to remain part of the series, and the 76ers will have one last chance to push back.

Final Word for the Celtics

Pritchard’s night was not just a hot shooting performance.

It was the product of everything Mazzulla described. Professionalism. Consistency. Mental toughness. The traits that matter when a player’s role changes, when minutes fluctuate, and when the easy path is not available.

The Celtics needed him in Game 4. He answered.

Now Boston heads home with a chance to finish the series, and Pritchard heads back with another piece of proof attached to his name.

The work shows.
