The Pittsburgh Steelers have made numerous moves in the wide receiver room this offseason. After trading for Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf last offseason, the team traded for two-time 1,000-yard receiver Michael Pittman Jr. during this offseason’s free agency period.
However, the team’s losses far outweigh the gains as it pertains to the position. Veteran pass-catcher Calvin Austin III is now on the New York Giants, and former Pro-Bowler Adam Thielen is now retired. Another one of those veteran Steelers wide receivers from a year ago has been signed to a new team. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, 31-year-old Marquez Valdes-Scantling is signing with the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal.

Valdes-Scantling signed with the Steelers’ practice squad on November 4th of this past season. He was later activated to the active roster on December 15th, marking a reunion with his old Green Bay quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. In six games, including playoffs, Valdes-Scantling recorded 13 receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.

The Steelers didn’t exactly have an elite wide receiver room in 2025, especially toward the back half of the season. Valdes-Scantling joined Metcalf, Austin, Thielen, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, and Ben Skowronek. Again, Austin, Thielen, Valdes-Scantling, and Miller are all either on new teams, retired, or still available to be signed. Valdes-Scantling will now join the Cowboys for the start of his ninth NFL season.

New head coach Mike McCarthy has made it a point to change up the wide receiver room this offseason. Remember, aside from Metcalf, the Steelers didn’t have a single wide receiver eclipse 500 yards in 2025. That is a problem. So, Pittsburgh has moved on from the likes of Valdes-Scantling, Thielen, Austin, and Miller.
Now, the wide receiver room is led by one of the league’s most physical pass-catchers in Metcalf and Pittman. Then, during the NFL Draft, Steelers GM Omar Khan drafted Alabama slot receiver Germie Bernard in the second round. Now, Pittsburgh’s depth chart is led by Metcalf and Pittman, with Bernard and Roman Wilson providing key depth. Of course, this group could look even better depending on who the quarterback is at the start of the upcoming season. Will it be the future Hall of Famer in Rodgers, the steady backup in Rudolph, Will Howard, or Drew Allar?
The overwhelming answer here should be Rodgers. A four-time MVP and Super Bowl MVP, the 42-year-old Rodgers ended up guiding Pittsburgh to its first AFC North title in five years last season. He recorded 25 total touchdowns and just seven interceptions while providing the offense with a consistent leader and steady play under center. Especially with his old Packers head coach, McCarthy, in charge now, Rodgers should be the clear starting option for Pittsburgh this season if he wants to come back.
