The Milwaukee Bucks brought in Taylor Jenkins as the new head coach without even hearing from Giannis Antetokounmpo. All signs point to an inevitable split which makes their next steps even more obvious.

The Milwaukee Bucks are quickly running out of moves left to amend what feels like an untenable situation. With things seemingly coming apart, their next steps in a way become much clearer. With the hiring of Taylor Jenkins being finalized and no reported involvement from Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee has entered a holding pattern. The draft lottery hasn’t happened yet. Free agency hasn’t opened. Trades can’t materialize. Extensions and options are untouched.

But just because the Bucks can’t cant doesn’t mean they can’t make decisions. And right now, all signs point toward one uncomfortable reality: they need to prepare as if Giannis won’t be part of the future.

Time for Milwaukee to Look Ahead to the NBA Draft

Milwaukee is currently slotted around the 10th pick in the upcoming draft, and while the lottery could shift that slightly, the most realistic outcome is staying in that range. That means the front office should already be locked in on prospects projected in that tier. Not the dream scenarios of vaulting into top-four fantasies. The real big board where they are likely going to have to make a judgement call on “best player available.”

For a team that hasn’t selected in the lottery since 2016, the timeline of this position along with the looming future of Giannis Antetokounmpo makes this pick crucial. Because if Giannis is moved before on on draft night, that pick suddenly becomes far more than just a role player addition. They become a foundational piece for a franchise looking to rebuild for the first time in over a decade.

Define Trade Value Through the Playoffs

Beyond the draft, the Bucks need to get a head start on understanding the landscape of the potential trade market. Milwaukee needs to evaluate its veterans through the lens of postseason basketball. Players like Bobby Portis, Kyle Kuzma and Myles Turner all carry value, but only if that value aligns with what playoff teams actually need. Although the Bucks are not active participants in the postseason, they should be paying close attention to those who are.

Milwaukee’s goal as spectators should be to see how and where their veteran trade chips could be of value to other teams around the league. How are floor-spacing bigs performing? What is the real impact of versatile forwards? Which archetypes are thriving under playoff pressure? What performs best in the postseason can help determine what skillsets and archetypes will sell highest on the trade market along with what kind of a return they are worth.

If the Bucks overestimate their players, they’ll get silence. If they align their expectations with what contenders are seeing right now, they can build legitimate trade frameworks. Because these aren’t rebuilding assets, they’re win-now pieces. That narrows the buyer pool and raises the importance of getting the valuation right.

Bucks Need to Let Jenkins Set the Direction

Everything ultimately funnels back to Jenkins. His hire wasn’t just about stabilizing the present, it was about defining the future. And his vision will quietly reveal everything Milwaukee needs to know.

If his plan emphasizes development, unlocking players like Kevin Porter Jr. and building around younger pieces, that’s a signal. If it centers on maximizing Giannis and pushing for contention, that’s another. But the key is alignment. If Jenkins’ blueprint doesn’t clearly revolve around Giannis, the Bucks have their answer. And at that point, the decision isn’t becomes less about emotions and more about strategy.

The Bucks can’t make moves yet. But they can prepare for the ones that matter most. That preparation starts with accepting the direction this is heading. Right now, the smartest thing Milwaukee can do is operate as if Giannis Antetokounmpo has already played his final game for the franchise. Because if that becomes reality, the teams that planned ahead are the ones that recover fastest.
