The Golden State Warriors‘ head coach Steve Kerr is reflecting on many things with his future with the team in question. However, he’s also reflecting on his past.

During a recent interview with The New Yorker, the legendary head coach touched on a number of topics. One surprising discussion focused on his past criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Kerr has long been known for speaking openly on social and political issues, never holding back from memorable soundbites and quotes. However, he said that parts of his rhetoric went too far, including a remark he made after Trump’s 2016 presidential election victory.

“Calling the President a buffoon, I kind of regret that, even though I felt it in my heart,” Kerr told The New Yorker. “It’s better to point out policy decisions, but also American values. What’s wrong with the things that he does.”

Kerr explained in the longform that over time he’s learned to strike a better balance between expressing personal views and representing the broader organization.

“I’ve learned I need to be better in terms of representing our organization in a way that I could still let my feelings be known but not get too personal. I’m representing a large group of people,” Kerr said to The New Yorker.

The interview also revisited Kerr’s response to the NBA’s 2019 China controversy, sparked by Daryl Morey of the Houston Rockets for tweeting support for Hong Kong protesters. At the time, Kerr declined to weigh in, which he says he now regrets. Morey is now President of basketball operations of the Philadelphia 76ers.

“I gave a really weak answer. I was trying to walk the line,” Kerr said to The New Yorker. “Yeah. I was wrong… I didn’t handle it well. I was trying to walk the company line and not make the NBA mad.”

Kerr said he won’t stop speaking out entirely, instead refining how he does it.

A Look Back at Steve Kerr’s Career

Kerr has built one of the most unique résumés in NBA history with several titles as both a player and coach. His 15-year -paying career included five titles while a member of the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, playing alongside legends Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan. Arguably his most notable moment was a title-clinching shot in the 1997 Finals while with the Bulls.

He became the Warriors’ head coach in 2014, helping guide the franchise to one of the most dominant decades by any franchise in NBA history. The Warriors have won four titles and reached six NBA finals under Kerr, and have revolutionized the style of play thanks to players like Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

What’s Next for Steve Kerr and the Warriors

It’s unclear if Kerr has already coached his final game for the Warriors. Kerr, including during his interview with The New Yorker, has been candid about taking time before making any decisions about his future. It appears the organization is taking the same approach during its evaluation of the future of the franchise.

Neither the team nor Kerr have released any official statements about next season.
