Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans got a fine addition to his group in Kayden McDonald.
The Houston Texans may have addressed the one thing that could count as a weakness on their otherwise stellar defense with Kayden McDonald.
The 6-foot-2, 326-pound defensive tackle is a load to handle in the middle of the D-line.
His physical profile makes the fit quite clear, but McDonald brings plenty to the table from a character standpoint, too, that he should fit in well with the culture Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has instilled.

McDonald was one of 10 players that former Super Bowl champion (as a player) and NFL scout Bucky Brooks’ list of “perfect” fits, with the Texans’ rookie ranking fourth.
“McDonald will blend right in as an energetic interior defender with heavy hands and an array of quick arm-over maneuvers that lead to backfield blowups on running plays. His combination of physicality and finesse complements the skills of edge defenders Will Anderson Jr. (who earned first-team All-Pro honors last season) and Danielle Hunter (a five-time Pro Bowler),” Brooks wrote on May 1.

“This is one of my favorite fits…. the run defense, holding the point of attack, the move-the-O-line-backwards stuff… but the thing that I’m most excited about is actually the pass-rush stuff.”
Brooks praised the “Texans as one of the biggest and baddest bullies on the block in the AFC,” and noted that “Ryans has assembled a grizzled, tough-minded defense that imposes its will on opponents with relentless energy, effort and physicality.”
McDonald has been billed as all of those things, and he joins a Texans team that, at least on paper, was only missing someone like him on the defensive side of the ball.
“That defense is a championship defense. I think one of the underrated picks the other night was Kayden McDonald,” Tannenbaum said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on April 29. “He really is going to anchor the middle. If they had a vulnerability, it was at defensive tackle. That is a championship defense.”

McDonald, like several of his Texans teammates this offseason–including quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Tank Dell–has partaken in some activities around Houston this offseason.
He recently attended the Houston Rockets’ playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers along with Anderson and Texans owner Hannah McNair.
During a conversation with NFL reporter Chancellor Johnson, McDonald’s mindset shone.
Johnson shared a video on X on May 1 of an exchange with the Texans’ first-round pick in which he asked McDonald, “How are you enjoying Houston?” To that, McDonald replied that he is “just here to plug up the middle, man,” eliciting some laughing emojis from Johnson.
As light-hearted as that exchange was, it speaks to the workman-like approach that McDonald has prided himself on taking as a player.
“I always felt like the underdog, even growing up,” McDonald told reporters during his introductory teleconference on draft night. “I always get the short end of the stick. It’s all good because it’s gonna add fuel to the fire, Day 1. Everybody that went before me, that’s what fuels me. There’s not one player better than me in this class. I’m gonna show it, first day. Day 1, I’m coming in to work.”
