LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers drives to the basket against Golden State Warriors defenders during the second half at Chase Center.

At 41, LeBron James is still finding new ways to define longevity.

The NBA announced Monday that James has been named Western Conference Player of the Week for Week 25 of the 2025-26 season, a recognition that comes at a pivotal moment for the Los Angeles Lakers as they prepare for the postseason without two of their top playmakers.

James averaged 24.0 points, 9.7 assists and 6.0 rebounds while leading the Lakers to a 3-1 record to close the regular season — production that underscored his ability to shift roles yet again amid injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

“Trying to make plays, I had to tap back into a role I’ve been accustomed to in the past,” James said. “Circumstances have put me back in trying to feed off my teammates, teammates feeding off of me, and just trying to make things happen for us.”

LeBron James Steps Into Lead Role Again

With Doncic sidelined by a Grade 2 hamstring strain and Reaves dealing with a Grade 2 oblique injury, the Lakers have turned back to a familiar formula — one centered on James orchestrating the offense.

The four-time MVP has long thrived as both scorer and facilitator, but his late-season stretch reflected a renewed emphasis on playmaking, helping stabilize a team navigating key absences.

Shortly after the league’s announcement, the Lakers confirmed the honor marked a record 70th Player of the Week award for James, further extending one of the most decorated résumés in NBA history.

Lakers Face Playoff Reality Without Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves

Despite the positive momentum, the timing of the award highlights a larger concern.

The Lakers are set to host the Houston Rockets in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Saturday at Crypto.com Arena, but both Doncic and Reaves are expected to miss the opening stretch.

Doncic is slated to rejoin the team after undergoing treatment overseas, while Reaves’ recovery timeline could extend into early May.

That leaves James as the focal point once again — a role he has embraced throughout his career, but one that carries added weight given the stakes of the postseason.

LeBron James’ Historic Resume Adds Context to Latest Honor

James’ latest recognition comes as he continues to build on an unprecedented career.

He enters his 19th playoff appearance, tying Karl Malone and John Stockton for the most in NBA history.

He also remains the league’s all-time scoring leader across both the regular season (43,440 points) and playoffs (8,289), becoming the only player to surpass 50,000 combined points.

Beyond scoring, James ranks among the top playmakers in league history with over 12,000 assists and continues to add to his totals in games played, minutes and postseason production.

What This Means for Lakers’ Playoff Outlook

The Lakers finished the regular season at 52-29 and will face a Rockets team that nearly matched their win total, setting up one of the most competitive first-round matchups in the Western Conference.

Houston, led by Kevin Durant, presents a physical and versatile challenge — one that could test Los Angeles’ depth without its full roster.

James beat Durant and Rockets guard Amen Thompson for the final NBA weekly award.

For the Lakers, the path forward may depend on how long James can sustain this level of production while awaiting reinforcements.

Big Picture: LeBron James Still Carrying the Moment

James’ Player of the Week award is more than a late-season accolade.

It’s a reminder that, even in his 23rd season, he remains capable of elevating his game when circumstances demand it.

With the postseason set to begin and uncertainty surrounding the availability of Doncic and Reaves, the Lakers once again find themselves relying on a familiar equation:

LeBron James — still producing, still adapting, and still carrying the weight of expectations when it matters most.
