Cubs acquire Tyler Ferguson

The Chicago Cubs have made a move to bolster their pitching staff.

Chicago has been decimated by injuries to its rotation and bullpen, so the Cubs pulled off a trade on Thursday. The Athletics announced that they traded Tyler Ferguson to the Cubs.

“The A’s have traded RHP Tyler Ferguson to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations,” the Athletics announced.

The Athletic DFA’d Ferguson for assignment after just one appearance this season, and the Cubs opted to make a move for him.

Ferguson pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 4 runs in his lone appearance on May 5 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander was selected in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers but didn’t make his MLB debut until 2024 with Oakland.

In his first year in the MLB, Ferguson went 4-2 with a 3.68 ERA in 48 games, and last season, he went 4-2 with a 4.66 ERA in 56 games.

Ferguson will add some much-needed pitching depth to the Cubs amid their injuries.

MLB World Reacts to Ferguson Trade

The Cubs pulled off a trade for Ferguson on Thursday in what could be a low-risk move for Chicago.

Following the trade being announced, the MLB world reacted to the move.

“I fully expecting Jed to do something like this, just to get an arm on the roster,” a fan wrote.

“Always good to keep an open mind but in this also on a short leash,” a fan added.

“Please no,” another fan wrote.

Ferguson struggled in his lone outing this season, but the past two years, he’s shown he can be an effective pitcher out of the bullpen.

“He’ll have a better pitching coach just like Jason Junk and Mason Miller and Sean Newcomb,” a fan wrote.

“27.0 ERA. Fantastic,” a Cubs fan added.

“If he has a pulse, I’m in,” a fan wrote.

Ferguson spent the last three years in the Athletics organization. In his career, he’s also spent time in the Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations, but has only pitched in the MLB with the Athletics.

Cubs Dealing With Pitching Injuries

Chicago trading for Ferguson is needed amid the Cubs’ injuries.

The Cubs announced that starter Matthew Boyd is out for multiple weeks after suffering a left meniscus injury while on the ground with his kids.

“It’s probably closer to six weeks, and that’s with him getting ramped back up,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said pregame Thursday. “That’s what we’re hopeful for. Obviously, we will see how it all goes. The important thing is, how much time do we miss of throwing? That’s the biggest thing. The knee is going to recover quickly, but how much throwing down time do we have to take?”

Along with Boyd, left-hander Justin Steele had a setback from his elbow surgery and is not a potential option until the second half. Cade Horton, meanwhile, underwent season-ending surgery.

Along with those three, Jordan Wicks has been on the IL due to a left forearm issue and has struggled in his rehab outing. Top prospect Jaxon Wiggins is also on the IL in the minor leagues.

Despite all the injuries, the Cubs are 26-12 and atop the NL Central.
