Victor Wembanyama already knows who he wants lifting the Champions League trophy.
The Paris Saint-Germain star supporter did not hesitate when asked about the upcoming Champions League final against Arsenal. During an appearance on Amazon Prime’s “Nightcap” after the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 115-108, Wembanyama gave a blunt prediction that immediately spread across social media, per Fadeaway World.
“Oh come on, PSG of course,” Wembanyama said. “At least PSG is going to make it somewhat fun, because I know Arsenal ain’t.”
The comment quickly divided soccer fans online. Some laughed at the French star’s loyalty to his home country’s powerhouse club, while others took his shot at Arsenal’s style personally. Wembanyama’s support for PSG is nothing new, but his jab at Arsenal’s approach added fuel ahead of one of the biggest matches in European soccer.
PSG reached the final after surviving Bayern Munich with a 6-5 aggregate advantage following a tense semifinal second leg draw, SI reports. Arsenal earned its place with a gritty aggregate win over Atlético Madrid, continuing an unbeaten Champions League campaign.
The matchup at Puskas Arena in Budapest features two clubs chasing very different stories.
PSG enters the final as reigning European champions after finally capturing the club’s first Champions League title last season. Under Luis Enrique, the French side has leaned into aggressive attacking soccer that overwhelms opponents in transition and open space.
Arsenal arrives with a different identity. Mikel Arteta’s squad built its run through defensive discipline, structure, and dangerous set pieces. The English club still searches for its first men’s Champions League trophy despite years of domestic success.
The two clubs already know each other well from recent meetings. Arsenal defeated PSG during league phase play thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka. PSG responded when the stakes climbed higher, eliminating Arsenal in the semifinal round.
That history only added more attention to Wembanyama’s comments. Fans from both sides flooded social media with reactions shortly after the clip surfaced online. Some Arsenal supporters called the Spurs star biased because of his French roots, while PSG fans embraced the comments and joked that Wembanyama already sounded ready for the celebrations in Budapest.
Wembanyama’s remarks came after another dominant performance from the 21-year-old star. The French phenom finished with 39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks while shooting over 72 percent from the field against Minnesota.
His confidence after the game extended beyond basketball.
During the same interview, Blake Griffin asked Wembanyama about embracing high-pressure moments throughout his NBA growth. His answer revealed why he gravitates toward massive stages like the Champions League final.
“I’ve really been waiting since I’ve been in the league to live those moments,” Wembanyama said. “Those high-stakes games, that’s what I love.”
He added, “It’s even stronger as the games go on. I’m just built for this.”
That mentality likely explains why Wembanyama wants a final packed with attacking chances and nonstop pressure. In his eyes, PSG offers that excitement more than Arsenal’s calculated approach.
Whether Arsenal fans agree is another story entirely.
