The Philadelphia Eagles don’t have many pressing needs on the defensive side of the ball heading into the long haul of the rest of the offseason — now it’s just about sharpening the edges where they can be.

One of those needs is cornerback depth, and just like any other team, finding players willing to be put into the meat grinder of NFL special teams. To that end, the Eagles are getting a closer look at 2-time Super Bowl champion cornerback Nazeeh Johnson.

“Former Chiefs free agent CB and special teamer Nazeeh Johnson is visiting with the Eagles today, source says,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on his official X account on Monday. 

“Nazeeh Johnson was a seventh-round pick by the Chiefs in the 2022 NFL Draft,” The Philly Special’s Anthony DiBona wrote on his official X account. “He tore his ACL in 2023 and missed most of last season due to a shoulder injury. Johnson started eight games for the Chiefs in 2024 and is an outside CB. Potential competition for backup (cornerback) and (special teams).”

Blazing 40-Yard Dash Time Equaled Day 3 Pick

Johnson, 5-foot-10 and 199 pounds, is a West Virginia native who stayed in his home state to star at Marshall before propelling himself into the NFL draft with a blazing 40-yard dash time of 4.38 seconds at the NFL scouting combine.

“Undersized but explosive, Johnson is a three-year starter with plus athletic ability who appears to be missing the physical elements needed to stay at safety as a pro,” NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote in his pre-draft evaluation in 2022. “He loses battles to tight ends working underneath or down the seam and is a below-average stopper as a tackler in space. Johnson might be suited for a permanent move to nickel corner, where his pattern matching and twitch could be shaped and improved with more coaching. He needs a more aggressive approach when playing the football if he’s going to make a team.”

The Chiefs used a 7th round pick (No. 259 overall) on Johnson, who won a Super Bowl as a rookie — beating the Eagles — and again in his 2nd season, although he sat out the entire year with a torn ACL suffered during training camp.

Johnson had his best season in 2024 with 56 tackles and 3 pass deflections while playing in 16 games with 6 starts as the Chiefs fell short of a 3-peat in a blowout loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.

Eagles Have NFL’s Elite Cornerback Duo

The Eagles are sitting on the NFL’s elite cornerback duo with 2024 1st-round pick Quinyon Mitchell and 2024 2nd-round pick Cooper DeJean.

Mitchell was a Day 1 starter at cover cornerback for the Eagles and DeJean joined him as the starter at slot cornerback shortly after. The 2 spearheaded a Super Bowl win following the season — a game highlighted by DeJean’s 33-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The 2 put their games up another level in 2025, when both players were named NFL All-Pro in just their 2nd season. Also of note? Both Mitchell and DeJean will be eligible for their 1st contract extensions following the 2026 season.

Both players could be in line to become the highest-paid players at their position, eclipsing the 3-year, $40 million contract for Chicago Bears slot cornerback Kyler Gordon and the 4-year, $124 million contract for Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie.
