Celtics’ Jayson Tatum Message After Donte DiVincenzo Injury Draws Strong Reaction

Jayson Tatum reacts during a Boston Celtics game. His message following Donte DiVincenzo’s injury drew a strong reaction from Timberwolves coach Chris Finch.

Jayson Tatum didn’t hesitate when asked about Donte DiVincenzo.

The Boston Celtics star has been through it — the long nights, the uncertainty, the grind that follows an Achilles tear. So when DiVincenzo went down early in Minnesota’s Game 4 win over Denver, Tatum’s response came from a place few around the league can fully understand.

“It was tough seeing that,” Tatum said after Boston’s playoff win. “I never want anybody to go through that injury and what’s to come with the rehab process.”

By Monday, that message had reached Minnesota. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch made sure to acknowledge it.

“I think Jayson Tatum’s comments were super classy, kind and compassionate. Mean a lot,” Finch said. “I know Donte’s heard them and he’s been such a great example of what’s possible.”

Jayson Tatum Speaks From Experience After Donte DiVincenzo Injury

Tatum’s words carried weight because of what he endured just a year ago. His own Achilles rupture during the 2025 playoffs forced him into a demanding recovery process — one that reshaped his offseason and tested his patience.

Now, on the other side, he understands both the physical and mental toll.

“I know for a fact I’m going to reach out to him at some point,” Tatum said. “Just happened yesterday, so it’s a lot going on for him… but he has me in his corner.”

There was no need for embellishment. The message was simple, direct — and, as Finch noted, meaningful.

Celtics Star’s Recovery Offers Blueprint

Tatum’s return has quietly become one of the league’s most telling recovery stories.

He has made a full recovery and looks every bit like the top-tier player he was before the injury — firmly back in the conversation among the NBA’s elite. In 16 regular-season games this year, Tatum averaged 21.8 points, 10 rebounds and 5.3 assists, quickly re-establishing his rhythm.

He has elevated that production in the playoffs, averaging 23 points, 10 rebounds and 7.7 assists, showing no hesitation in high-leverage moments.

For players like DiVincenzo, that matters. It doesn’t shorten the rehab timeline, but it provides something just as valuable — proof.

Donte DiVincenzo Injury Reverberates Across NBA

DiVincenzo’s injury came just 1:19 into Game 4, ending his night almost as soon as it began. The Timberwolves later confirmed a ruptured right Achilles tendon, and he underwent surgery in New York performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley — the same surgeon who handled Tatum’s procedure.

He is out indefinitely.

The eighth-year guard had been a key piece for Minnesota, averaging 10.8 points in the postseason while spacing the floor and defending multiple positions.

His absence leaves a clear gap in the Timberwolves’ rotation as they push toward the second round.

NBA Brotherhood Shows in Key Moment

Even as the Celtics focus on their own postseason path, Tatum’s words offered a reminder of how quickly priorities can shift.

“You never want to see anybody injured, especially that one,” Tatum said. “I know exactly how he’s feeling… I know exactly what he has to go through.”

For Finch and the Timberwolves, that understanding stood out.

In the middle of the playoffs — with pressure mounting and stakes rising — the moment cut through everything else.

One player reaching back to help another move forward.
