Cameron Young enters the PGA Championship in incredible form, winning two times already this season (The Players and Cadillac Championship). However, the dialogue around him on Tuesday related to his golf ball, not his play.

On Tuesday, news released that Young uses a golf ball that follows the rollback guidelines established by the USGA and R&A. The new guidelines currently plan to begin sometime between 2028 and 2030. Supposedly, the rollback forces the golf balls to carry approximately 13-15 yards less on average per golfer. Manufacturers and the PGA of America challenged those estimates.

Young uses a Titleist Pro V1x Double Dot, which he began to utilize at the Wyndham Championship last year. He ranked 17th in driving distance on the PGA Tour last season, and his distances hover around the same number this year. He hit the longest drive in the Shotlink era on the 18th hole at The Players.

Further reports emerged that other golfers switched to the Double Dot. Those names include Vince Whaley, Rico Hoey, Kris Ventura, Neal Shipley, and Jhonattan Vegas. While not a popular choice so far among elite players, the early data points show interesting developments.

Young’s driving ability, launch angle, and swing speeds create a unique issue given how he attacks a golf ball. Players with similar attributes can take advantage of the “flaws” (for lack of a better term) in the proposed rollback changes.

Joseph LaMagna of the Fried Egg detailed the problems with the current rollback propositions: “What [the Double Dot] does not prove, however, is that there isn’t a distance problem. More than anything, Young’s ball choice should serve as a wake-up call to the governing bodies. If they want to address a legitimate issue plaguing the golf world at large — not just the professional game — they need to get serious about a solution. A modest rollback targeted only at the golf ball will not have a significant impact on the game.”

Professional Golfers Question Rollback

Brian Harman commented on the rollback.

He said, “If there was a solution out there to where you could snap your fingers, and every single person lost 20 yards, well, everyone would be in favor of it. But that’s not the solution that’s been provided. I think the answer is a lot more nuanced. I don’t disagree that there is perhaps a problem, but the solution that they’ve come up with is not it.”

After witnessing only a two-yard decrease in distance during rollback testing, Adam Scott also showed criticism to the proposed regulations.

He said, “I just feel like they [the R&A and USGA] are not going to achieve what they want to achieve the way they are going about trying to roll back the ball… There’s a lot of different factors that could be addressed to get the desired result which I could be in favor of.”

Lucas Glover also showed his input, scoffing at the idea that players select a specific golf ball to maximize distance.

He said, “It’s laughable that they think we use the longest golf balls that are available to us. They think we optimize for distance, that’s ludicrous. Nobody hits the ball we can hit the furthest, we use a ball that’s the best all around. A lot of guys use a ball that doesn’t go as far for more feel.”
