A former Miami Dolphins quarterback will join the Baltimore Ravens

Following the 2023 season, the Miami Dolphins appeared to be set at the quarterback position for the rest of the decade. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards that season, and despite a late-season collapse by the team, the future seemed bright for Tagovailoa and the Dolphins.

Additionally, the Dolphins appeared to have a strong developmental option behind him in former seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson, who had previously started a playoff game for the Dolphins. Unfortunately,things went south for Tagovailoa and Thompson in the 2024 season. Tagovailoa got hurt, and Thompson struggled as his replacement. Now, neither quarterback is a member of the Dolphins, and while Tagovailoa will compete for the starting job with the Atlanta Falcons, Thompson’s next team has just been revealed.

Former Miami Dolphins Quarterback Signs With Ravens

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson is expected to sign with the Baltimore Ravens, which will make Thompson the fifth member of their quarterback room.

Regarding the move, ESPN’s Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley posted on X: “On Saturday, Ravens coach Jesse Minter said the team could carry three to five QBs this offseason and mentioned Baltimore could look at some veteran QBs. Now, Ravens are adding Skylar Thompson, a four-year veteran who has played for the Dolphins and Steelers.”

Thompson was a member of the Dolphins for three seasons, as he was waived toward the end of the 2024 season. During that season, Thompson started one game for Miami, struggling against the Seattle Seahawks. He was later replaced as the backup quarterback by Tyler Huntley, despite Huntley being signed during the season. Thompson will now reunite with Huntley as backups to Lamar Jackson in Baltimore.

Regarding Thompson’s stint with the Dolphins, Dan Lyons wrote for Sports Illustrated:

“Thompson, a seventh-round pick out of Kansas State in 2022, appeared in 11 games across three seasons for the Dolphins, making four career starts (three in the regular season) for the franchise. He went 1–3, including a tight 34–31 playoff loss at the Buffalo Bills in ’22 in which he threw for 220 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.”

The former Dolphins quarterback has totaled $3.2 million in career earnings, according to Spotrac. The length and value of his deal with the Baltimore Ravens has yet to be revealed.

Miami Dolphins Quarterbacks

Miami’s new quarterback for the 2026 season also has a connection to the Baltimore Ravens. Malik Willis, who the team signed in free agency, had limited playing time with the Green Bay Packers behind Jordan Love, but he impressed in his lone start last season which came against former Dolphins quarterback Tyler Huntley and the Baltimore Ravens.

During that start, Willis went 18-for-21 with 288 passing yards, 60 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. 

Meanwhile, Thompson’s role with the Dolphins now belongs to Quinn Ewers, who was also drafted in the seventh round. Similarly to Thompson, Ewers also started for the Dolphins in his rookie season as he replaced Tua Tagovailoa. Dolphins fans will hope this quarterback room turns out better than that one did.
