The New York Mets, in the midst of a rough start to their season, have their share of glaring problems. However, one could eventually serve as a problem and a solution. With centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. suffering an injury, the franchise could start using this time as a trial to determine where the future of the franchise lies. Stephen Parello of Rising Apple highlights the issue.

“Robert Jr. entered the season as a potential X-factor for New York. He didn’t need to be the potential franchise cornerstone he looked like when he cracked 38 homers back in 2023, but he also couldn’t be as bad as he’s been over the past two seasons. At first, he looked like the perfect change of scenery candidate.”

At 25, back in 2023, Robert slugged 38 home runs and stole 20 bases. In addition, he led the American League in range factor, the metric that measures a player’s ability to cover ground and make plays. However, everything is from there, from a statistical viewpoint. Robert, while always a free swinger, sat mired in the middle of a struggle with the White Sox.

For the price of utility player Luisangel Acuna, the Mets acquired him. As Parello mentioned, the team didn’t need him to be the cornerstone. Instead, as a complementary player, all Robert needed to do was play a strong center field and hit a bit. However, a back injury could derail that. Where does that leave the Mets?

Benge Could Provide a Glimpse into the Future

Rookie Carson Benge, although not a natural centerfielder, could be the long-term solution. Benge shows an excellent range in the outfield. With 35 innings in center field, manager Carlos Mendoza trusts the rookie to take over.

However, his bat has not matched his defense. For instance, in batting. 186, Benge occasionally looks lost at the plate. A certain pitch confused the former first-round pick. For example, the slider appears to be an issue. According to Baseball Savant, opponents have struck him out with sliders 50% of the time.

Morabito Call Up Could Be A Summer Surprise

At 23, the Syracuse outfielder could see his way to Citi Field before the end of the season. If he continues to hit the same way, the promotion could become permanent. With a slash line of .397/.455/.851, Morabito profiles as the centerfielder of the future.

While he does not possess Robert’s power palette, his contact and speed on the basepaths more than compensate. On top of that, he hasn’t made an error since 2024. Right now, veterans Andy Ibanez and Austin Slater each hold a roster spot, but neither possesses the athletic ability to play center.

Long-Term Plan Could See Robert Leave

The Mets own a club option on Robert for next season. At a price tag of $20 million, the team will probably decline, allowing the outfielder to enter free agency. Meanwhile, that still does not solve the Mets’ problem. With a team filled with high-priced talent, the franchise still needs to integrate younger players. Can both Morabito and Benge eventually become those outfield centerpieces?
