Bruce Cassidy is one of one of the top coaches available

The future of the Edmonton Oilers is a big topic of conversation following a first round postseason performance versus the Anaheim Ducks that did not go to plan. Most of the dialogue has been centered around franchise player Connor McDavid, but the talk extends throughout the rest of the organization as well.

One of the areas of the team that could look different next season is the coaching staff. Coach Kris Knoblauch’s seat has grown hotter as a result of this playoff shortcoming. It is very likely that Edmonton management feels the need to make a change behind the bench this summer. If so, the Oilers will have options at their disposal.

Bruce Cassidy Connected to Possible Oilers Role

Bruce Cassidy has an argument for best coach available on the market. Cassidy was released from the Vegas Golden Knights towards the end of this past season in favor of John Tortorella.

Cassidy has an impressive resume behind him. He has won the Jack Adams award for best coach in the NHL, having won the trophy in 2020 during his time with the Boston Bruins. He has won the Stanley Cup, leading his former Vegas team to the championship in 2023.

He could be exactly the coach this Oilers team needs to take them over the top. The possibility is there via insider David Pagnotta on Hello Hockey: “I believe that Bruce Cassidy is among, and there are more than one, options that they will consider if they go that route.”

It is no surprise that Cassidy would appear not to be out of job for long following his Vegas departure. The Oilers will not be alone, other teams will be lining up for his services this offseason as there are not many coaches with his winning pedigree on the table.

This Coaching Hire Could be Oilers Last Shot With McDavid

It cannot be stressed enough how important this coaching decision is for Stan Bowman and the Oilers front office. With McDavid only having two years left on his current deal, this is a hire the organization has to get right if they decide to let go of Knoblauch and his staff.

Knoblauch has not performed badly in Edmonton; he has taken this team to two Stanley Cup finals. But they have lost both and failed to win a series this year. That is not good enough. Anything less than a Stanley Cup win with McDavid is a failure.

With McDavid’s contract expiring in 2028, the Oilers have effectively one year to get this right. Because if its another letdown next season and he opts not to extend in the summer, the Oilers may be forced to make a trade. They would be unlikely to risk losing him for nothing on the open market.

Whoever the Oilers coach ends up being in 26-27, the pressure will be on to win. Another playoff mishap will not be tolerated, this team needs to bring home a Stanley Cup. Anything less than that may not be enough to keep McDavid happy in Edmonton.
