Ryan Weathers kept it real when discussing his latest outing for the Yankees

The New York Yankees have come back down to earth after a red-hot start to the season, as they have lost five of their past six games to lose control of the American League East division. The main culprit has been the lineup, as it has failed to score more than three runs in each of their past five losses, which has put a big strain on the pitching staff.

The Yanks’ most recent loss is a perfect example of that train of thought. Starting pitcher Ryan Weathers delivered a stellar outing (6.1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 3 BB), but New York still managed to find a way to suffer a 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. After the game, Weathers didn’t hold back when discussing his performance in the Yankees’ loss.

Ryan Weathers Dishes on Yankees’ Latest Loss

Weathers appears to be competing with Will Warren for a spot in the starting rotation once Gerrit Cole gets activated off the injured list, and he made a statement in this outing. The only hit Weathers gave up came to begin the seventh inning, as he hurled six no-hit innings before the wheels came off. Brent Headrick would come in give up a three-run home run to Coby Mayo later in the inning that would give Baltimore the only runs it needed to come out on top.

Besides a two-run home run from Ben Rice, New York provided Weathers with virtually no support. And while he did his best to keep his team in the game, it was ultimately not enough for the Yankees to prevail, which left a sour taste in his mouth in the wake of this game, even though this was arguably the best outing of the season for him.

What the future holds for Weathers when it comes to his spot in the Yankees’ starting rotation is unknown, as Cole is closing in on a return to the majors. For the time being, though, Weathers is simply focused on going out and doing whatever is required of him, and while his no-hit bid was exciting, he’s ultimately more focused on helping his team win games.

“Just felt like I was competing in the strike zone really well,” Weathers said after the game. “Still, I had a few walks that I wish I could take back. But yeah, just got my stuff in the zone … It was cool, but I wish we would have been able to pull out a win. We got a good ballclub, so we’re gonna be able to get some more wins.”

New York has the luxury of having too many good starting pitchers at its disposal. Once Cole returns to action, he’ll join a rotation headlined by Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Cam Schlittler. One of Weathers or Warren will earn the final spot, but the problem for manager Aaron Boone is that both guys have been fantastic to begin the year.

With this start now in the books, Weathers’ numbers (2-2, 3.00 ERA, 54 K, 1.11 WHIP) are slightly better than Warren’s (4-1, 3.46 ERA, 53 K, 1.20 WHIP), which could be all he needs to solidify his spot in the rotation. The main concern for New York, though, involves getting back in the win column, which is what it will look to do on Tuesday afternoon in the second game of its series vs. Baltimore.
