The Chicago Bears are being urged to add a superstar coming off a contract with the Detroit Lions following the NFL draft.

The Chicago Bears may have quietly landed one of the most intriguing offensive chess pieces of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Third round rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas has already caught the attention of head coach Ben Johnson. Johnson made it clear this week that Chicago has a specific plan for the LSU speedster.

“We all have a vision for how this guy could really help us,” Johnson said regarding Thomas, whose elite acceleration and versatility stood out throughout the draft process.

Johnson also emphasized just how rare Thomas’ traits are.

“Those guys don’t grow on trees,” Johnson added.

The rookie ran a blazing 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He is already generating buzz as a potential offensive weapon beyond just wide receiver. According to Johnson, Thomas has shown the ability to line up all over the field, including in the backfield where the Bears could manufacture touches for him both as a runner and pass catcher.

Bears Already Planning Creative Role for Rookie

General manager Ryan Poles sounded equally excited discussing what Thomas brings to the offense.

“There’s acceleration,” Poles said. “It’s that zero to 60 where you can just feel it.”

Chicago reportedly fell in love with Thomas’ explosiveness, instincts and ability to create in space. The LSU product became known for turning short touches into massive gains, something Ben Johnson appears eager to incorporate into his offense immediately.

The Bears reportedly envision Thomas as more than just a traditional receiver. Johnson, offensive coordinator Press Taylor and wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El all reportedly shared a vision for how his versatility could stress defenses.

Thomas took snaps out wide, in the slot and even in the backfield during college. Johnson specifically mentioned his ability to take handoffs and run routes from the backfield, opening the door for gadget packages and motion heavy concepts similar to how creative offenses deploy hybrid playmakers.

While Thomas is not expected to become a high volume offensive player immediately, the Bears appear focused on maximizing every touch he gets.

Tarik Cohen Comparison Starting to Surface

Some Bears fans initially worried Thomas could become another Velus Jones Jr. Velus was a former third round pick whose speed never translated consistently at the NFL level and was a huge bust.

However, Chicago reportedly believes Thomas is a much more natural football player with stronger instincts and more reliable hands.

There is also another former Bear beginning to emerge as a possible comparison: Tarik Cohen.

Like Cohen, Thomas brings rare short area explosiveness, return ability and the kind of sudden movement skills offensive coaches love building packages around. Cohen became an All Pro weapon in Matt Nagy’s offense by thriving both as a returner and offensive mismatch piece.

Thomas could carve out a similar niche under Johnson.

The rookie scored three return touchdowns during his college career and may initially make his biggest impact on special teams. But with Johnson already “sketching out plays” for him according to Poles, it is clear Chicago views Thomas as more than just a return specialist.

For a Bears offense suddenly loaded with speed and creativity, Thomas may quietly become one of the most fascinating rookies to watch entering 2026.

And when Ben Johnson sees a player with traits like this, Bears fans should get very excited.
