Toronto Blue Jays star pitcher Trey Yesavage has ruffled some feathers for a bizarre stance regarding autographs. Yesavage is currently the top-rated prospect in the organization. According to MLB.com, the pitcher was the ninth-ranked youngster in all of baseball entering 2026. This was before Konnor Griffin, Kevin McGonigle, and J.J. Wetherholt made their official MLB debuts.
While rehabbing with AAA Buffalo, Yesavage recently appeared on the Rochester-based WeTheHobby podcast. The top prospect covered a series of topics, including his path to the big leagues and how his recovery from a shoulder injury is progressing. He, however, also obviously discussed the hobby of card collecting.
During the interview, Yesavage claimed that he just began card collecting in 2025. This came at a time when the budding star was called up to the Blue Jays. Evidently, Toronto outfielder Myles Straw was one of his new teammates to help get him into the hobby. Yesavage went on to claim that he collects both baseball and football cards, as he is a Philadelphia Eagles fan.
The pitcher, however, went on to admit that he keeps cards that fans send to him in hopes of receiving an autograph in return. “I mean, people send me my cards in the mail to sign and send back, but I don’t sign them,” claimed Yesavage. “I’ll put that out there: if you send them to me, you’re not going to get them back. I do keep some of them and give them to my family.”

It is safe to say that Yesavage’s admission has not gone down well with people in the hobby. CllctMedia posted the clip of the podcast to social media, which has now gained more than 600,000 views. For comparison, the actual full podcast on YouTube has under 2,000 views at the moment. A vast majority of the replies on social media were negative, to say the least.
The reply with the most likes claims that Yesavage “ain’t good enough” to take such a stance. A quote reply with over 5,000 likes by an account called @baseball_cards points out that fans sending cards through the mail to get an autograph is a fairly standard practice. The user claims that they will begin sending Yesavage cards of players who hit home runs off of him.
Some fans, however, have defended Yesavage for the remarks. As @BigBobsCards points out, the 22-year-old prospect is simply from a different era compared to previous MLB stars who were willing to sign cards they received through the mail.
Yesavage instantly became a fan-favorite thanks to his stellar performances during the Toronto Blue Jays playoff run in 2025. Despite only making three starts for Toronto in the regular season, the pitcher was extremely reliable come the postseason. In fact, Yesavage posted a 3.21 ERA in six total playoff appearances en route to the World Series.
The top prospect has, however, struggled during his rehab assignments to start 2026. Yesavage has recorded a 7.50 ERA in 12 innings between A Dunedin and AAA Buffalo. He most recently failed to get out of the second inning in his most recent start on April 21.
