Trevor Story kept it real when discussing his latest struggles for the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox seemed to be generating some positive momentum as of late, but they suffered another agonizing series defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays after losing the rubber match between the two sides 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Along the way, star shortstop Trevor Story suffered another ugly performance for the Sox.

While Story did manage to pick up a double in this one, he struck out in each of his three other at-bats, and he committed a crucial error in the field, which is already his fifth one of the season. As a result, the Fenway Park crowd began booing Story during this game, and he kept it real when discussing his ongoing struggles after Boston’s latest loss.

Trevor Story Dishes on 2026 Struggles with Red Sox

With guys like Rafael Devers and Alex Bregman no longer in town, Story was viewed as a guy who needed to take on a bigger role at the heart of Boston’s lineup in 2026. Considering how he was fresh off the best season of his tumultuous stint with the Sox in 2025 (.263 BA, 25 HR, 96 RBI, 31 SB, .741 OPS), there was reason to be confident about Story heading into the new season.

Instead, Story has been a mess for the Red Sox. He’s looked like a shell of himself at the plate (.200 BA, 2 HR, 18 RBI, .520 OPS), and his defense at shortstop remains subpar. With Marcelo Mayer continuing to play out of position at second base, calls for Story to get moved off this spot have continued to grow louder as of late.

Story’s ugly outing on Sunday seemed to be the final straw for many fans, as they began booing him late in their loss to the Rays. No end is in sight for Story’s woes, and while he knows that all eyes are on him, he’s confident that his performance on the field will turn around soon, so long as he keeps putting in the work necessary behind the scenes.

“It’s tough to go through in the moment, but I have confidence that I can do it because I’ve done it before,” Story said of his struggles, per Gabrielle Starr of The Boston Herald. “Takes one game, takes one pitch. And I’m always optimistic about it. I’m not gonna sit here and pout about it. I’m not gonna sit here and feel sorry for myself. I think you just got to put in the work, and it just takes one. You just got to believe in that. And we can get rolling from there.”

Story is an important leader in the Red Sox’s clubhouse, and to this point, the team has remained steadfast in its commitment to him. We’ve already seen widespread changes get made, though, as manager Alex Cora and several members of his staff got fired at the end of April, so if Story can’t get his act together soon, he could find himself with a spot in the starting lineup.

The main problem for Boston is that, besides moving Mayer to shortstop, there isn’t really anything it can do about Story’s struggles. It simply needs him to get going, or else the remainder of the 2026 campaign is going to be quite a drag. The Red Sox will enjoy a much-needed day off on Monday before kicking off a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
