The NASCAR world is mourning the loss of longtime NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour owner Steve Mendoza, whose passing has prompted emotional tributes throughout modified racing. Mendoza spent years building respected race teams while helping drivers compete at a high level in NASCAR regional racing. He became known for his hands-on approach, strong work ethic, and dedication to the sport.

NASCAR confirmed the news in an official statement and recognized his lasting impact on the garage area. Mendoza shared a close friendship with driver Andy Jankowiak, who honored him earlier this season after an emotional victory at Talladega.

As the NASCAR community reacts to the loss, many drivers, crew members, and fans continue to remember Mendoza for his role in keeping modified racing strong for many years.

NASCAR Community Reacts To Steve Mendoza’s Death

NASCAR released an official statement following Steve Mendoza’s death and praised his dedication to the sport.

“NASCAR is saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Mendoza, a dedicated member of the racing community and owner in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour,” the statement said.

“Steve’s passion for the sport was evident through his commitment to fielding competitive cars and supporting drivers, including his work with Andy Jankowiak and others throughout his time in the series.”

NASCAR also highlighted the respect Mendoza received throughout the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour garage area.

“He was respected in the garage for his perseverance, his care for his team, and his love of modified racing. Our thoughts are with Steve’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him during this difficult time.”

Steve Mendoza became widely respected in NASCAR Modified racing for his old-school approach to team ownership. He focused on competition, preparation, and helping drivers succeed instead of chasing attention or major sponsorship deals.

Andy Jankowiak Tribute Becomes Emotional After Steve Mendoza’s death

Earlier this season, Andy Jankowiak earned a major win in the ARCA Menards Series at Talladega Superspeedway after holding off Cleetus McFarland in the closing laps.

After the race, Jankowiak dedicated the victory to Steve Mendoza in an emotional Victory Lane interview.

“I’ve had too much help, so many people who help make all of this happen. This has never been more of a team effort standing in Victory Lane at Talladega. What an adventure,” Jankowiak said.

“This one’s for my best friend, Steve Mendoza. I’m wearing a green bandana for him. I love him so much, and I know he’s home watching.”

The moment has gained even deeper meaning following the NASCAR owner’s passing. The green bandana Jankowiak wore during the Talladega victory became a symbol of their friendship and years together in racing.

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Loses Respected Team Owner

Steve Mendoza spent years helping teams compete in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and local modified racing events. His teams regularly arrived prepared to race, and competitors respected the effort he put into the sport every week.

Mendoza also publicly praised fellow racers during his career. Speaking about Tom Rogers Jr., he once said, “Tommy’s hall of fame career at Riverhead speaks for itself, five Modified championships, 63 wins & counting, plus all his other success there too.”

The NASCAR community continues to honor Steve Mendoza for his years of dedication to modified racing. His impact remains visible through the drivers, crews, and teams he supported throughout his career.
