Tina Fey Reveals What Tom Brady Was Really Like Behind the Scenes at ‘SNL’

Tom Brady participates in practice ahead of the Fanatics Flag Football Classic at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on March 20, 2026.

When Tina Fey talks about the best hosts in “Saturday Night Live” history, one name still stands out years later — Tom Brady.

Speaking during a recent appearance at The History Talks event in Philadelphia on April 18, Fey reflected on working with the former New England Patriots quarterback and explained why athletes like Brady often thrive in the high-pressure world of live sketch comedy.

Why Athletes Like Tom Brady Excel on ‘SNL’

Fey, a longtime writer and cast member on “Saturday Night Live,” said athletes consistently outperform traditional Hollywood stars in one key area: coachability.

“The thing about Tom and so many other athletes, we always would say at SNL that athletes make the best hosts because one, nothing is at stake for them, like they don’t care if it goes well, they’re not trying to get a movie out of it,” Fey said.

That mindset creates a major advantage.

Unlike actors who may be focused on promoting a project, athletes come in with a team-first mentality — one built on taking direction, adjusting quickly, and executing under pressure.

‘Yeah, Do That Faster’: Brady’s Coachable Approach

Fey pointed to a clear difference between athletes and actors when it comes to feedback.

“You can go up to an athlete host and be like, ‘Yeah, do that faster.’ They’re like, ‘Yes, ma’am,’” she said. “You can’t go on to like an Oscar-winning film actor and say like, ‘[Be] faster.’”

That willingness to take direction — something Brady built his entire NFL career on — translated seamlessly to the SNL stage.

The same coachability that defined Brady’s two-decade run with the Patriots showed up immediately in a completely different setting.

A ‘Relaxed Readiness’ That Stood Out

Fey also highlighted what she described as a “state of relaxed readiness,” something she believes separates athletes from other hosts.

She said athletes are uniquely prepared to handle live pressure without overthinking it.

“So like they’re just kind of chill,” Fey said, noting that athletes approach big moments the same way they prepare for games.

That balance — calm but fully locked in — became a signature of Brady’s career, especially in high-stakes situations.

Brady Admitted the Experience Wasn’t Easy

Despite Fey’s praise, Brady has acknowledged that hosting “Saturday Night Live” pushed him outside his comfort zone.

In a 2022 conversation with SNL cast member Kenan Thompson, Brady said he felt a “little panicky” before the live show began as last-minute changes were made.

“I remember when we did Saturday Night Live together and we did all the skits on that pre-show, the live one before the live [show],” Brady said. “And then afterward, we went up to Lorne [Michaels]’ office.”

Brady added that Michaels reminded him of someone very familiar.

“That was like [Bill] Belichick,” he said, referencing his longtime Patriots head coach.

With just minutes before going live, Brady said the pressure hit quickly.

“I remember thinking, ‘I need tequila, I gotta get down, I gotta get changed. I need two shots of tequila before I go on. Like, let’s get this thing going,’” he said.

From the Field to the Stage

Brady hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2005 during the show’s 30th season — and, according to Fey, left a lasting impression.

For her, it wasn’t surprising.

The same traits that made Brady one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history — discipline, adaptability, and composure — translated directly to a completely different kind of performance.

“In my mind, I’m Tom Brady,” Fey joked.

It’s a line that lands as both humor and insight — a reminder that elite-level preparation doesn’t always stay confined to one arena.
