Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is signing with the Dallas Cowboys.

Former Kansas City Chiefs two-time Super Bowl champion and starting wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is signing with the Dallas Cowboys in the latest NFL news, just after the draft.

The Athletic’s Cowboys beat reporter Jon Machota was among those relaying the signing on April 27, informing: “Source: The Cowboys are signing WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year deal. He played for the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers last season, totaling 14 catches for 120 yards and 1 TD.”

Before that, Valdes-Scantling also spent time with the Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and the team that drafted him, the Green Bay Packers.

This news was confirmed by several insiders and reporters on X, including NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

New Cowboys WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s NFL Career Has Fallen Off a Cliff After Chiefs Tenure

Valdes-Scantling had his best statistical season with the Packers in 2020, racking up 690 receiving yards. However, he accumulated 687 receiving yards in his first year with the Chiefs in 2022, and he had the most team success in KC.

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl in both seasons that “MVS” was on the team, despite many believing that he never lived up to his contract. Kansas City must have agreed with that sentiment, ending Valdes-Scantling’s deal one year early.

Since his time with the Chiefs, the veteran wideout hasn’t had much success.

MVS had a brief 8-game run of production with the Saints in 2024 after failing miserably in Buffalo. He then joined Seattle in free agency and never played in a regular season game with the Seahawks, who went on to win the Super Bowl without him.

Following his summer in Seattle, Valdes-Scantling split time between the 49ers and Steelers. He posted slightly more yardage (80 total) with the latter.

As you can see, MVS’s career has mostly fallen off a cliff since his glory days winning Super Bowls with Kansas City. The Chiefs were right to move on from the big-play threat, even if his time in KC was wildly successful.

Chiefs Elected Not to Prioritize Wide Receiver in NFL Draft

Many experts and analysts had the Chiefs drafting a wide receiver in round one. Not only did they pass on the position twice on night one of the NFL draft, but Kansas City also ignored the position with their next three selections.

That’s a clear sign that KC is more comfortable with their wide receivers than the NFL community thought.

The Chiefs did eventually pick Cincinnati wide receiver Cyrus Allen with their second fifth-rounder of 2026. The Athletic’s scouting expert Dane Brugler ranked Allen as his 27th draftable WR ahead of the rookie selection.

“A dynamic athlete, Allen moves with twitch as a route runner, although some of his steps and movements can get choppy,” Brugler scouted ahead of the NFL draft. “Despite his lack of size (5-foot-11), he shows outstanding body control to adjust and frame the football mid-air, and his drops declined each season.”

“Because of his below-average play strength, he can be out-physicaled, both mid-route and at the catch point,” the draft analyst went on. “[Allen] has only average lateral agility, and you’d like to see him do more with the ball in his hands. Proving himself as a returner will help his chances of making a pro roster (he has some kick return experience).”

Per Brugler, Allen’s “quickness and ball skills” were on full display at this year’s Senior Bowl, helping boost his draft stock in April.

Along with the rookie and UDFA Jeff Caldwell, the Chiefs will field a mostly familiar WR corps that headlines Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, Jalen Royals, Jason Brownlee, and Nikko Remigio.
