Raptors Get Bad News Ahead of Game 6 vs. Cavaliers

The Toronto Raptors are back at Scotiabank Arena with their season on the line, but they are not entering Game 6 against the Cleveland Cavaliers from a position of strength.

Cleveland leads the first-round series 3-2 and is favored on the road, with CBS Sports listing the Cavaliers as 4.5-point favorites for the May 1 elimination game. The same report listed Brandon Ingram as questionable with a heel injury and Immanuel Quickley as ruled out with a hamstring injury.

That is the bad news for Toronto: even at home, even with a chance to force Game 7, the Raptors are dealing with enough injury uncertainty that the betting market still sees the healthier Cavaliers as the stronger side.

The context matters because Game 5 was there for Toronto. The Raptors led by 12 multiple times before Cleveland rallied for a 125-120 win. Dennis Schroder scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, while James Harden and Evan Mobley each finished with 23 points. RJ Barrett led Toronto with 25 points, Ja’Kobe Walter added 20 and Scottie Barnes posted 17 points with 11 assists, but the Raptors went cold late after Ingram exited.

Now Toronto needs to win without knowing whether one of its most important half-court scorers will be available.

Is Brandon Ingram Playing Tonight? Star Still Listed as Questionable

Ingram is officially questionable for Game 6 with right heel inflammation, according to Sportsnet, after leaving Game 5 and missing the second half. Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic said after Game 5 that Ingram “re-aggravated that heel” on one play and that Toronto tried to retape him before halftime, but he was unable to return.

That makes his Game 6 status one of the swing points of the series.

Ingram has not had a dominant playoff series by his usual standards. Sportsnet noted he entered Game 5 averaging 14.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 33.9% from the field in the first round. He played only 11 minutes in Game 5, finishing with one point, one rebound and two assists.

But Toronto still needs him.

The Cavaliers can load more attention onto Barnes and Barrett if Ingram is unavailable or limited. Even when Ingram is not scoring efficiently, his size, shot creation and passing give Toronto another pressure point against Cleveland’s defense. Barnes said after Game 5 that the Raptors need Ingram’s “playmaking ability and his defense and everything he brings,” according to the Associated Press.

That is why the questionable tag is not just a minor injury-report note. Ingram’s status could reshape Toronto’s closing lineup, shot diet and late-clock offense in an elimination game.

Scottie Barnes Does Not Carry an Injury Designation

The best news for the Raptors is that Barnes does not carry an injury designation for Game 6, despite getting banged up in Game 5.

Barnes was kneed in the quadriceps by Thomas Bryant and was also poked in the eye during the first half, according to the Associated Press. Barnes admitted the quad issue affected his pace, but he still finished Game 5 with 17 points and 11 assists.

Barnes was not listed on the injury report for Game 6.

That matters because Barnes has been Toronto’s organizing force in the series. NBA.com noted after Game 5 that he was averaging 24 points and eight assists in the matchup, while Barrett was leading the Raptors in playoff scoring at 24.4 points per game.

If Ingram cannot play, Barnes’ workload becomes even heavier. He will have to create against a set Cleveland defense, punish mismatches, keep Barrett involved and help stabilize possessions when the Cavaliers’ pressure rises late.

Toronto can live with a banged-up Barnes if he is effective. It probably cannot live with a compromised Barnes and no Ingram.

Immanuel Quickley Injury: When Will He Return?

Quickley will not return during the Cavaliers series.

The Raptors guard has been unavailable because of a strained right hamstring, and Sportsnet reported he “remains sidelined” after previously being ruled out for the series. Reuters also reported after Game 5 that Quickley will miss the entire series with the injury.

That leaves Toronto without its starting point guard for the biggest game of its season.

The Raptors did get important backcourt production in Game 5. Walter and Jamal Shead combined to make 10 three-pointers after going 0-for-17 in the previous two games, according to Reuters. That helped keep Toronto within reach on the road.

Repeating that at home would give the Raptors a real chance to force Game 7. But relying on young guards to replace Quickley’s ball-handling, spacing and decision-making is a difficult ask in an elimination game.

That is the broader problem for Toronto. The Raptors are not out of the series, and Barnes being off the injury report is meaningful. But with Quickley already out, Ingram questionable and Cleveland holding both the series lead and the healthier roster, Toronto has to overcome more than just the scoreboard in Game 6.
