The Boston Red Sox let go Alex Cora and hired Chad Tracy as interim manager.
The Boston Red Sox manager gig is going to Chad Tracy on an interim basis, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, after the club fired World Series-winning skipper Alex Cora on Saturday, April 25.
Tracy has managed the Worcester Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate, since 2022. The WooSox have had a winning record in all four seasons under Tracy. The former MLB first baseman spent nine seasons in the big leagues. He hung up his spikes after the 2013 campaign.
Cora’s departure comes after a 17-1 blowout win over the Baltimore Orioles. Despite the strong effort, tensions had been brewing in the clubhouse. Jake Mintz of Yahoo Sports reported Cora showed up late to his pregame media availability ahead of a Friday, April 24, matchup against the Orioles. He didn’t apologize once he showed up and delivered terse answers to the reporters.

Cora: You gotta ask them, but I know it’s loud.
Me: What’s your role in protecting them from that?

Tracy has been tabbed as the interim skipper, which means there’s no guarantee he’ll last beyond this season. He’ll have plenty of runway, though. Boston canned Cora just 27 games into the 2026 campaign. The club is off to a concerning 10-17 start. With four straight losses heading into Saturday’s matchup versus the Orioles, the Red Sox had sunk to dead last in the American League East. The New York Yankees have a slim two-game lead on the division crown, followed closely by the Tampa Bay Rays.
The 45-year-old Tracy will get a shot in the big leagues after a relatively brief coaching career. He earned his first job while working in the Angels organization in 2015. Tracy took over as the manager for Single-A Burlington. The Bees scuffled to a 63-76 record in his lone season in charge. Tracy then moved to the Inland Empire 66ers of the California League. He led the Low-A club to an ugly 48-82 record in 2016. The 66ers took a relative step forward the following season, finishing with a 65-75 record.
Tracy spent four years as a coordinator in the Angels system before finally getting another managerial opportunity. He was brought to Boston’s organization as the WooSox manager for the 2022 campaign. Tracy found much more success in the International League. He led Worcester to a 75-73 record in his debut season. The team improved that mark to 79-68 the following year. Tracy won another 79 games in 2024. The WooSox have been above .500 in all four full seasons under Tracy. They were 14-11 to begin the 2026 season.
Cora wasn’t the only coach to be let go by the Red Sox on Saturday. The organization also parted ways with hitting coach Peter Fatse and bench coach Rámon Vazquez. Game-planning coach Jason Varitek, one of the most celebrated Red Sox players of the century, was reassigned to a new role.
The changes focused on the hitting side, which makes sense. Boston ranked 26th in scoring and 27th in batting average heading into today. The massive performance against the Orioles will move them up the leaderboard, but not to the level that was expected. Getting more out of the offense will be key for Tracy as he takes over the struggling squad.
