Craig Breslow provided an update on Jason Varitek's status with the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are currently in the middle of their best stretch of action in the 2026 campaign, as they have won four of their past five games to push their record to 17-22. Still, this is a team that is very much in disarray, thanks in large part to general manager Craig Breslow‘s decision to tear apart the coaching staff late in April.

While Boston’s decision to fire its manager, Alex Cora, caught the most attention, one guy whose future with the club also appeared to be over was franchise legend Jason Varitek, who had been working on Cora’s staff as his game planning coordinator. Varitek was “reassigned” to a new role with the Red Sox, but his status with the team has not been clarified since. When asked about Varitek’s new role recently, Breslow provided an eye-opening update on the situation.

Craig Breslow Issues Update on Jason Varitek’s Role with the Red Sox

Varitek spent his entire 15-year playing career with the Red Sox, and he turned himself into a legend of the franchise for helping the team win a pair of World Series titles in 2004 and 2007. Varitek eventually became a member of Cora’s coaching staff, with many folks hoping he’d eventually become the manager of the team.

It seemed like Varitek had an opportunity to earn that role when Cora’s firing was announced, but he was curiously reassigned to a new role. Nobody knows what that role is, and many folks believe that the club simply used this wording to hide the fact that it fired Varitek in an effort to avoid facing backlash from its fanbase.

Even if that was the plan, it has already been sniffed out by many fans, so nothing was really gained by the team’s unique handling of Varitek’s status moving forward. Breslow was recently asked what Varitek’s role with the team is, and his comments certainly seem to indicate that, for the time being, he is not a member of the Red Sox organization.

“We told him that there is a place in this organization for him for as long as he wants it,” Breslow said of Varitek on “The Greg Hill Show.” “The specific details and timeline will remain between us. But he has meant so much to this organization that it’s impossible to put that into words appropriately.”

Red Sox Hoping to Salvage 2026 Campaign

It’s been a messy start to the year for the Red Sox, and while Cora’s firing has left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans, the handling of Varitek may have been even worse. Varitek is universally beloved by the team’s fanbase, but it seems Boston has kicked him to the curb as well in favor of Breslow and the new-look front office.

The Sox still have a ton of talent on their roster, but there is just too much organizational dysfunction for this team to really have a shot at turning things around. Right now, Boston has some positive momentum, but it may only be a matter of time before another issue pops up that derails its progress.
