The Edmonton Oilers participation in the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs came to an abrupt end on Thursday night with a 5-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Now, the Oilers offseason storylines will take hold of the narrative as the club figures out what to do moving forward.
The onus on the club’s management will be to find a way to upgrade at various positions. Also, the biggest question mark will be the future of the team’s biggest stars.

One of the main Oilers offseason storylines will be the future of Kris Knoblauch at the helm. The narrative will likely revolve around the need for a new voice behind the Edmonton bench. However, that situation may be easier said than done.
The most complex issue potentially holding up a coaching change in Edmonton would be the availability of a suitable replacement for Knoblauch. While Bruce Cassidy remains on the open market, there’s no guarantee that he’d join the Oilers.
Additionally, the organization will need to assess if this year’s failure was really a question of the coaching staff or the players themselves.
