Rory McIlroy's text to Matt Fitzpatrick after his bunker shot won the Zurich Classic for his brother

Rory McIlroy reacted immediately to one of the most decisive shots of the 2026 PGA Tour season, sending Matt Fitzpatrick a blunt, five-word message after a dramatic finish at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The moment came after Fitzpatrick’s clutch bunker shot on the 18th hole helped secure victory for him and his brother, Alex Fitzpatrick, in the team event at TPC Louisiana.

The Fitzpatrick brothers combined to win the tournament at 31-under, edging out multiple teams tied at 30-under. The victory carried major implications, particularly for Alex Fitzpatrick, who earned a two-year PGA Tour exemption along with entry into upcoming signature events and the PGA Championship. It also marked a historic moment as the brothers became the first siblings in 20 years to win a PGA Tour event together.

The defining moment came on the par-5 18th, when Matt Fitzpatrick delivered a high-pressure bunker shot that set up a tap-in birdie to avoid a playoff. The execution drew immediate praise across the golf world, including from McIlroy, who was not in the field but closely followed the finish.

In footage shared by the PGA Tour, the Fitzpatrick brothers revealed McIlroy’s reaction in real time. As phones buzzed following the win, Alex Fitzpatrick asked, “Is your phone blowing up as well as mine?”

Matt replied: “It’s Rory. ‘What a f—— bunker shot!’”

The message captured the significance of the moment. Fitzpatrick was roughly 35 feet from the hole in the bunker and needed a precise third shot to give his team a chance at birdie. He delivered, leaving the ball just inches from the cup.

Alex Fitzpatrick converted the short putt to seal the victory, completing a dramatic final round in which their earlier four-shot lead had been erased. The win capped a strong stretch for Matt Fitzpatrick, who had already recorded a victory at the RBC Heritage and strong finishes across multiple events this season.

After the round, Fitzpatrick reflected on the achievement alongside his brother.

“To win a team event on the PGA Tour with my brother, I don’t know if it does get better than that,” he said. “I do seriously believe for me personally it’s just under a major.”

Alex Fitzpatrick, who recently secured a DP World Tour win at the Hero Indian Open, described the moment as overwhelming.

“I’m still lost for words,” he said. “Just an overwhelming emotion of happiness.”

The victory not only delivered prize money but also reshaped Alex’s career trajectory, granting him full PGA Tour status and access to elite events for the remainder of the season.

Rory McIlroy Truist Championship PGA Tour Return Schedule

While McIlroy was not part of the Zurich Classic field, his presence continues to be felt across the PGA Tour following his recent success. The six-time major champion has not played since securing back-to-back Masters victories at Augusta National earlier this month.

McIlroy is set to return to competition at the Truist Championship, which begins May 7 at Quail Hollow. The event will serve as a key preparation opportunity ahead of the PGA Championship later in May.

Speaking after his Master’s win, McIlroy outlined his approach to scheduling moving forward.

“I think different (the schedule between events). Different (from 2025),” he said. “I just won my sixth major, and I feel like I’m in a really good spot with my game and my body.”

He added: “I’ve got a couple of weeks off before I go back to play competitive golf, but I don’t think I’ll go through that lull of motivation.”

McIlroy opted to skip both the RBC Heritage and the Zurich Classic, as well as the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral. His selective schedule reflects a focus on maintaining performance levels while preparing for major tournaments.

As the PGA Tour moves forward, Fitzpatrick’s standout moment in New Orleans and McIlroy’s upcoming return highlight two key storylines shaping the early part of the 2026 season.
