Breece Hall officially signed his three-year contract extension with the New York Jets on Monday, May 11.

Head coach Aaron Glenn released a statement in response to this news.

“I’ve said all along I wanted Breece to be here,” Glenn said via a press release. “He’s a good football player that can help us win games. He has shown the ability to consistently make plays and have real impact on the outcome of games. We’re excited to keep him here as we continue to build a team that can compete each week.”

In other words? I told you so.

There has been rampant speculation that Hall was unhappy being a member of the Jets. Questions about Hall’s future were prominent during Glenn’s press conferences from last offseason through this past season and into this offseason.

Throughout it all, Glenn has shared a consistent message that he thought Hall was a really good football player, and he wasn’t in the business of losing good football players. Despite those words, trade rumors and speculative articles continued to populate the internet. So what did Glenn say shortly after that door was slammed shut, “I’ve said all along I wanted Breece to be here.”

Now you’ve got him for the next three years, coach.

If you ever felt like Hall was unhappy and didn’t want to be here, you’d probably be right.

Hall provided cryptic comments after games, posted vague quotes on social media, and was particularly active on X during the NFL trade deadline.

So what changed Hall’s perspective? He just became the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL on a per year basis.

Hall wanted to be a first-round pick badly back during the 2022 NFL draft. It didn’t happen. Hall badly wanted to be a 1,000-yard rusher, but it didn’t happen until just this past season.

The former Iowa State product wanted to be handsomely rewarded with a long-term deal that provided him with financial security. The Jets gave it to him.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my career with the Jets,” Hall said via a press release. “Through it all, this organization and our fanbase have continued to believe in me. This is where I want to be. I believe in what we’re building, and I’m appreciative of Woody, Darren, and AG for their continued trust in me. Let’s get to work.”

No Funny Business

When general manager Darren Mougey extends a player, you always have to give the details a second look.

Last offseason, the Jets made Sauce Gardner the highest-paid player in franchise history, at least temporarily, before Garrett Wilson’s contract extension came through. The deal strongly implied that Gardner would be here for the long haul as a core piece.

However, months later, he was flipped at the NFL trade deadline to the Indianapolis Colts for a blockbuster treasure chest of two first-round picks and wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.

So naturally, when Hall signed his deal, folks looked through his contract with a fine-toothed comb.

On the surface, it’s a three-year $45.75 million contract, which makes Hall the third-highest-paid RB in the league. However, it’s essentially a two-year, $29 million contract that is fully guaranteed.

In that final year of the contract, the Jets can either look to extend Hall to keep him here or consider flipping him to another team.
