The final verdict is in on New York Yankees‘ infielder Anthony Volpe.

After days of speculation on when he may/may not be called up to the majors, the Yankees have finally made a decision.

The Yankees swept the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend to improve to 23-11 (best record in the American League). After the 11-3 victory Sunday afternoon, Joel Sherman reported that Anthony Volpe has been notified he will be optioned to the minors on Monday when he rehabiliation assignment runs out. In 1717 career MLB at-bats, Volpe is a .222 hitter with 52 home runs, 92 RBI, and an OPS of .662. His tenure with the Yankees may be in serious jeopardy.

The New York Yankees X account wrote (on Sunday):

“Following today’s game, the Yankees returned INF Anthony Volpe from his rehab assignment, reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.”

Yankees to Option Anthony Volpe

Yankees’ controversial infielder Anthony Volpe will spend more time in the minor leagues.

In 2025, Volpe hit .212 with 19 home runs, 72 RBI, and 150 strikeouts.

This Volpe-Yankees situation finally has some direction. Earlier this week, a report surfaced that indicated Volpe could be reinstated between Wednesday and Thursday, but once those days passed, speculation that Volpe would stay in the minors started to get traction, and that’s the decision the organization has made for now. Jose Caballero has performed well thus far for the Yankees, and it’s become clear New York doesn’t necessarily need the services of Volpe for now. That’s certainly subject to change, but the trade rumors surrounding Volpe may also start to gain traction, especially if the Yankees have no plans to use him in a prominent role.

Manager Aaron Boone has been asked several questions about Anthony Volpe this week, and has pretty much side-stepped all of them with answers like “we’ll see” and “we’re still deciding.”

What’s Next for Anthony Volpe?

Anthony Volpe’s 2026 stats with both AA and AAA: .275 batting average, seven hits (1 home run), 40 ABs, six RBI, .683 OPS.

Volpe is still just 24-years-old, but this move is significant because he’s pretty much been the Yankees’ everyday shortstop since debuting in 2023.

He was thought to be the next Derek Jeter, and given he’s from the New York area, many Yankees fans were excited about his return, but Volpe has had a hard time at the plate at times, and isn’t the best defender either. In all three seasons he’s played in MLB, Volpe has 150+ strikeouts in each year.

So, what’s next for Anthony Volpe? When will the Yankees reinstate him? Or will they make an organizational decision to trade him? At this point, if New York plans on keeping him in the minors, it doesn’t make much sense to hold onto him.
