Hopes for a Patriots reunion with Stefon Diggs just got a little lower.

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been cleared of criminal charges, but isn’t in the clear with the NFL just yet.

Diggs was acquitted on the second day of his criminal trial on allegations that he assaulted a former personal chef in a dispute over money. The Massachusetts jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding the All-Pro wide receiver not guilty on all charges.

While the trial ended the legal peril for Diggs, a report pointed out that he could still face punishment from the NFL stemming from the incident.

Stefon Diggs Could Face Punishment From the NFL

Diggs had maintained his innocence leading up to this week’s trial, and jurors found him not guilty after the defense team challenged the accuser’s claim that Diggs had hit and choked her. But as The Associated Press noted, an acquittal is no guarantee that Diggs will avoid a suspension from the NFL.

“Several NFL players, including Ben Roethlisberger, Jameis Winston, and Ezekiel Elliott, have been suspended for violating the personal-conduct policy despite not being arrested or charged with a crime,” the report noted. “Roethlisberger, the former Steelers quarterback was suspended six games — it was later reduced to four after an appeal — in 2010 following sexual assault accusations.”

The report added that Winston was suspended for three games after a sexual assault allegation, while Elliott was suspended six games after the league investigated domestic violence allegations. Former Bills edge rusher Von Miller was also suspended four games after allegations that he assaulted a longtime partner.

The Associated Press noted that the NFL has not publicly cleared Diggs, saying that his incident remains under investigation.

“We have been monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Tuesday.

Stefon Diggs Faces Other Allegations

Diggs still faces allegations in a civil lawsuit that claimed he defamed a man over allegations of a stolen luxury car.

“In the docs, a man who claims he used to work for Stefon says in July 2024, Stefon requested he arrange for Stefon’s Ferrari to be transported from Miami to New York and then to Houston … but he says the Ferrari was stolen in Houston,” a report from TMZ noted. “The guy claims law enforcement concluded the Ferrari was stolen by third parties in a sophisticated theft … but he says Stefon started telling people in their circles that the guy stole the car.”

Despite the uncertainty over his potential suspension, Diggs has still been named a top candidate to join several teams, including some Super Bowl contenders. CBS Sports writer Tyler Sullivan suggested he would be a strong fit for the Los Angeles Rams, giving the team a third target for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

“The Rams had been hunting for a wide receiver to add alongside Puka Nacua and Davante Adams all offseason,” Sullivan wrote. “So far, they haven’t come away with one, opting to take Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13 overall instead of addressing that need.”
