Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and 14-year kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. made headlines on Saturday evening after getting arrested for a DUI in Texas. Currently the head coach of the UFL’s Columbus Aviators, Ginn was forced to miss his team’s matchup against the Dallas Renegades on Sunday. This made way for former NFL head coach Todd Haley to take over as interim head coach. It is unknown whether or not Ginn will be available to coach in the team’s next game on April 17th against the Renegades.

After a legendary college career at Ohio State and after starting his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins as a first-round pick, Ginn was traded to the Niners for a fifth-round pick in 2010. The three-time All-American was mostly used as a return man during his long career. His punt return average of 11.8 yards during his three-year stint in San Francisco was the highest mark of any of his NFL stints.

His kick return average of 23.5 yards was also the highest of any of his NFL stints. Three of his seven career special teams touchdowns came during his time in the Bay Area. He made the first of his two career Super Bowl appearances in 2012 with the team. It is fair to say that he was one of the league’s best special teams players, especially during his Niners career. Once again, he became a free agent after the 2012 season and ended up moving on to the Carolina Panthers.
From there, he would bounce from the Panthers to the Arizona Cardinals before going back to Carolina, where he played in his second Super Bowl in 2015. The Cleveland native would then finish up his career with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears.

The 49ers could sure use some of that prime Ted Ginn Jr. return magic this upcoming season. Veteran return man and former Super Bowl champion Skyy Moore has left San Francisco for Green Bay this offseason. This is significant because Moore’s kick return average of 28.1 was the team’s highest mark since the 1972 season. Time can only tell if the Niners will find his replacement before the start of the upcoming season. Perhaps it is already on the roster.
Third-year running back Isaac Guerendo was another return man for head cach Kyle Shanahan last season. While he only returned five kicks last season, he averaged a modest 20 yards per return. Still just 25 years of age, perhaps he could be the team’s starting kick returner in 2026.
In an upcoming season in which the Niners will have clear Super Bowl aspirations, special teams will be a major x-factor just as it has been in years past. If the return game is on another level in the biggest moments, so will the Niners.
