The New York Mets continue to struggle this season, and there are no clear signs that the team will turn it around anytime soon. However, it appears Carlos Mendoza’s job is safe.

While the rumors continue to swirl that Mendoza is on the hot seat, president of baseball operations David Stearns made it clear he will not be fired.

“We know our record is not what we want, and we know we are capable of more,” Stearns told MLB.com. “We don’t view this as a manager problem, and we don’t intend to make a change.”

The Mets currently have an MLB-worst 10-21 record, sitting 11.5 games out of first place in the National League East. They’re also 29th in runs scored.

Carlos Mendoza Has Tall Task Ahead With New York Mets

The Mets are off to a third-worst start in franchise history, and that’s despite having one of the most expensive rosters in baseball. MLB.com reported both Stearns and owner Steve Cohen have not even considered making a managerial change, even though two other managers — Alex Cora and Rob Thomson — have already been let go just over a month into the season.

However, Mendoza has quite the task ahead of him. The Mets are currently a dumpster fire. Francisco Lindor is on the IL, while Luis Robert just joined him. Juan Soto is battling another minor injury, and none of their notable offseason signings are living up to expectations.

New York had lost 12 in a row before finally ending the skid on April 22. But that victory over the Minnesota Twins didn’t come without disappointment, as Lindor suffered his injury. Since then, they’ve lost five of seven.

Stearns Still Believes in Mets

It’s simply not fair to blame this ball club’s struggles on Mendoza. Cohen and the front office built a very good roster that just isn’t getting the job done. Yet, Stearns still firmly believes New York will have a miraculous turnaround and become a contender.

“I still think we’re a good team,” Stearns said last Friday, via ESPN. “I recognize we had a stretch where we did not play good baseball and it cost us and cost us repeatedly. But I think we’re a good team and I think we’re going to show that.”

Mendoza is in the final season of his three-year deal that he inked in 2024.

“I don’t think anybody anticipated something like this,” Mendoza said recently, via ESPN. “You know you’re going to get hit with injuries and you’re going to face adversity. But to have everything at the same time is crazy. But, hey, we got to keep going.”

The Mets officials may believe their team can still make the playoffs, but no team in MLB history has ever done so after losing 12 straight games. Maybe, just maybe, they will be the first out of 138.

Whether New York figures it out or not, Mendoza is safe — for now. But, if they keep losing, it’s hard to imagine the front office sticks it out with the skipper for the entirety of a 162-game campaign.
