The 2026 NFL Draft wrapped up on Saturday, and now all eyes are on players who may be selected early in the 2027 NFL Draft. One such player is Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby, but his prospects might now be in jeopardy.

Brendan Sorsby is Heading Into Residential Treatment Program

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sorsby will be entering a residential treatment program to address his gambling addiction, as announced by the school on Monday.

“Sorsby’s decision to seek treatment, according to sources, came in the wake of the discovery of Sorsby making thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app, which jeopardizes his eligibility with Texas Tech,” Thamel wrote.

Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech this offseason after spending two seasons at Cincinnati, where he appeared in 24 games, throwing for 5,613 yards and 45 touchdowns. Before joining the Bearcats, Sorsby played for Indiana. While Sorsby was at Indiana, he reportedly bet on games while he was redshirting in 2022.

“According to sources, Sorsby bet on Indiana football while redshirting for the Hoosiers as a true freshman in 2022, a season in which he played in a single game as a reserve,” Thamel added. “The bets in 2022, according to sources, were on Indiana to win and none came in a game in which Sorsby appeared.”

Thamel mentioned that there isn’t any attention from law enforcement regarding Sorsby’s gambling problem at the moment.

“Sorsby’s gambling has not drawn the attention of law enforcement, according to sources, nor has he been linked to anyone attempting to influence the outcome of a game. Sorsby’s gambling, sources said, was a steady flurry of small bets over a period of time,” Thamel wrote.

There’s a strong possibility that Sorsby won’t be able to play college football anymore, as athletes are prohibited from betting on NCAA or professional sports.

“As for his on-field future, the NCAA has a strict policy against any type of gambling by athletes on “intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition,” and violators are ineligible for competition, subject to appeal,” Thamel added.

If Sorsby can’t play in college again, there are a few options he can explore this offseason to pursue a football career in 2026, potentially including entering the NFL Supplemental Draft.

NFL Supplemental Draft Could Be an Option

The NFL Supplemental Draft offers a crucial chance for players who either missed the opportunity to enter the main draft in April or, like Sorsby, may not be eligible to play college football again. Typically, the Supplemental Draft serves as a last resort for players aiming to reach the NFL, a route Sorsby might need to consider this offseason. The Cleveland Browns discovered one of the best quarterbacks in franchise history, Bernie Kosar, during the 1985 NFL Supplemental Draft, so if Sorsby has to go down that path, it may not be the end of the world for him.

The most important thing for Sorsby right now is to tackle his gambling addiction first; once he manages that, he can shift his focus back to football later on.

There are still many steps to complete following the NCAA investigation before anyone knows whether Sorsby will be allowed to play college football this season.
