New Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman connected to Myles Murphy through a charity event.

It’s been a busy offseason for the Cincinnati Bengals, adding to their defensive line. That included the notable trade for Dexter Lawrence, who is now looking to connect with and ingratiate himself with his new teammates.

Recently, that included edge rusher Myles Murphy. Lawrence would make an appearance at Murphy’s Gears & Grills Auto Showcase on Saturday at St. Xavier High School. There, proceeds from the event were going directly to The Myles Murphy Foundation. That’s a non-profit that serves both families and the youth in the cities of Cincinnati and Atlanta.

Murphy wasn’t necessarily expecting Lawrence to show up, but he did anyway. It’s a step that’s going a long way in developing chemistry for the Bengals defensive line.

“It means a lot,” Murphy said. “I really respect him for just showing up and being here… He was over here for over an hour. The more teammates can hang out outside of the locker room, it means a lot. It just brings us closer together.”

Defensive line has been a major weakness for the Bengals in recent seasons. So, with any luck, this type of connection is going to continue to grow stronger and then translate to on-field success.

ESPN Names Defensive Tackle the Most Improved Position for the Cincinnati Bengals

It’s pretty clear that the Cincinnati Bengals were focused on the defensive line this season. ESPN, at the very least, took notice of that and recently named defensive tackle Cincinnati’s most improved position of the offseason.

“This might be the biggest slam dunk of the offseason. The Bengals not only traded for Dexter Lawrence II but also signed Jonathan Allen in free agency. Interior pass rush has been something the team has lacked for years,” Ben Baby wrote.

“Early in the offseason, de facto Cincinnati GM Duke Tobin outlined the strategy: ‘Pass rush is king.’ It’s wild to consider given the team’s decision to let defensive end Trey Hendrickson leave in free agency, but the Bengals spared no resources to improve a D-line that needed more depth.”

These comments on the Bengals came in a broader Power Rankings. There, Cincinnati is ranked No. 17 overall. That’s good for second in the AFC North, but it comes with plenty of opportunity to keep growing.

Bengals Make Key Decision on the Future for Myles Murphy

One major question this offseason surrounded Myles Murphy and his fifth-year option. In the end, Bengals GM Duke Tobin decided not to exercise it, leaving his future with Cincinnati up in the air.

“The Bengals are not picking up the fifth-year option for DE Myles Murphy, per source, but they have interest in keeping him in the fold long term. Murphy had 5.5 sacks for Cincinnati last season,” Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported.

In other words, the Bengals are open to signing an extension with Murphy, just not the fifth-year option. When asked about this, Murphy seemed to dismiss concerns about what this meant in the long term.

“The fifth-year [option] wasn’t there, but that’s not for me to worry about. I’m here to play football,” Murphy said. “I appreciate everyone in the organization and my teammates and coaches.”

Murphy is going into his fourth season with the Bengals. 2025 proved to be the most productive of his career, compiling 5.5 sacks and 52 total tackles. So, hopefully, he keeps building on that, particularly with an improved line around him.
