The Kansas City Chiefs are slowly but surely getting back to football activities.

They are hosting rookie minicamp throughout the weekend, and will have voluntary OTAs at the end of the month. In early June, the Chiefs will hold mandatory minicamp, which all players must attend.

Voluntary or not, the Chiefs usually have great attendance during their offseason programs. They have a lot of new faces in 2026, both within the roster and coaching staff. Players who are returning are looking to get the bad taste out of their mouth from last year.

Andy Reid Says Patrick Mahomes Is ‘in a Good Position’ to Participate During Kansas City Chiefs’ OTAs

Reid spoke to the media following rookie minicamp on Saturday, and was naturally asked about Mahomes’ recovery from the torn ACL he sustained last season, and if he will be able to participate during OTAs.

“We’ve got to see on that,” Reid said. “He is in a good position to be able to do some things. There’s some rules and regulations that go with that, so we got to just make sure that we’re on top of that part. If he can do some things, remember Phase 2 there’s no contact. There’s no offense versus defense. It’s Phase 3 that you get into that. Once you start the clock, then the clock’s got to be rolling, so you have to evaluate what you want to do there. He’s in a position where he can do everything, I think.”

As Reid alludes to, it seems as though Mahomes will be able to participate in OTAs given that there is no contact. Mahomes has been throwing for a while now, so it shouldn’t be an issue barring a setback. It will be advantageous for Mahomes to participate and get timing down with his pass catchers.

It’s Still Too Early to Tell if Patrick Mahomes Will Play Week 1

Participating in OTAs and minicamp is one thing, but the first big sign that Mahomes could be on track to play in Week 1 will be if he takes part in training camp. Although quarterbacks aren’t supposed to be hit during training camp, the action is full-speed, and incidental contact is sometimes made to QBs.

Reid went on to say that he still doesn’t have a long-term gauge on the timetable of Mahomes’ return, but Mahomes is doing the most he can at this point during his recovery.

“I know he’s doing a lot of stuff right now,” Reid said. “He is throwing the ball. He does it on his own.”

Reid then joked about potentially revealing too much, or putting the cart before the horse.

“He’s not getting in any trouble here,” Reid joked. “I don’t have video.”

The Chiefs have set themselves up nicely if Mahomes has to miss some regular season action. They traded for quarterback Justin Fields, who is a former first-round draft pick that possesses a big arm and elite running abilities. Fields will likely get more snaps than a backup usually would during training camp and preseason as Kansas City likely takes things cautiously with Mahomes.
