Despite being found not guilty at trial, New England Patriots insider Doug Kyed doesn't think it's likely the team brings back Stefon Diggs.

It’s been a long offseason for former New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, which saw him have to fight a legal battle over allegedly strangling his personal chef. He’d be found not guilty of that in court, and now Diggs is turning his attention back to the football field.

The question for Diggs comes down to where he’ll be playing in 2026. Many Patriots fans would like to see that be back in New England. After all, he was the team’s leading receiver a season ago. However, as Doug Kyed of The Boston Herald explained, it isn’t a likely reunion.

“It feels slim, even after Stefon Diggs was found not guilty on assault and strangulation charges. Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said in March that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of re-signing Diggs,” Kyed wrote. “I think it makes more sense for Diggs to go elsewhere now that his legal situation is cleared up.”

Restructuring the wide receiver room has been an obvious goal for the Patriots this offseason. That has included signing Romeo Doubs, as well as being involved in constant A.J. Brown rumors. Of course, for some fans, that’s allowed them to dream about adding Diggs and Brown, but that’s even less likely than just adding Diggs.

“The odds of the Patriots trading for Brown and signing Diggs are even slimmer. That would be a lot of money dedicated to the wide receiver position between Brown, Diggs and Doubs,” Kyed concluded.

Stefon Diggs played one season in New England. In that brief time, he had 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and 4 touchdowns in the regular season. That would lead the team statistically. In March, the Patriots released him with concerns that his production might drop from there, and the legal battle still hanging over his head.

There is no doubt that Stefon Diggs wants to find his home for 2026 as quickly as possible. He’s confident too. So much so that he recently took to Instagram to advocate for himself. There, he would post a highlight reel of himself.

“This is not an opinion-based sport, so here are the numbers. I played 52% of the snaps and finished with 85 catches for 1,045 yards coming off an ACL.,” Diggs wrote in the caption. “Where we going?

Some of Digg’s teammates with the Patriots saw the post. That included Christian Gonzalez and Bradyn Swinson, who both hopped in the replies to advocate that he return to New England.

Gonzalez wrote, “To the pats.” Meanwhile, Swinson said, “Bring yo ass back.”

Clearly, there is some desire to get a deal done to bring Diggs back to New England. At least, there’s a desire between him and his former teammates to play together again. Whether or not that’s practical for the Patriots is another story.

The Lawyer for Stefon Diggs Expects Him to Quickly Find a Team

Shortly after Stefon Diggs was found not guilty, his lawyer stepped outside and spoke to members of the media. There, he loudly advocated for his client, sharing that he expects Diggs to sign with an NFL team soon.

“He’s been vindicated,” the lawyer said. “And I believe that a team will reach out and sign him imminently. They’re going to be lucky to get him.”

There is still some concern that Diggs could face a challenge due to the NFL’s personal conduct policy. At the same time, he is still a quality wide receiver and there are teams who could use him as they look to make deep playoff runs in 2026.

“Any team that signs him will be lucky to have him,” the lawyer added. “We are very pleased and happy that Stefon will continue on and play football in the National Football League.”
