The San Antonio Spurs regained homecourt advantage after beating the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 3 of their second-round playoff series on Friday night.

Victor Wembanyama led the way for the Spurs, finishing with a crazy statline of 39 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. He went toe-to-toe with Anthony Edwards, who had 32 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in the Timberwolves’ 115-108 loss.

The Spurs jumped into an early lead in the first quarter, but Edwards went on a run of his own to make things close. The game was very physical until the end, with Wemby scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter.

According to the Associated Press, Victor Wembanyama is just the fourth player in NBA postseason history to have at least 35 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a game. Wembanyama joined an elite list that includes all-time great centers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal.

Wemby is the only player on the list to shoot better than 70% from the field. He was 13-for-18 from the field, knocking down two 3-point shots, and making 10 of his 12 free-throw attempts.

It was a masterclass performance from Wembanyama, who carried the Spurs in the fourth quarter. He’s the main reason why San Antonio has a 2-1 series lead heading into a pivotal Game 4 on Monday night back at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Olympic.com further elaborated that Wemby’s performance was just the ninth time it was recorded in the NBA playoffs since 1973. O’Neal and Olajuwon did it three times each in their legendary careers, while Abdul-Jabbar had two.

Wemby even told reporters after the game that he had to use one of the things he learned from Olajuwon in the offseason against Rudy Gobert.

“I had to resort to some things that Hakeem taught me in this fourth quarter,” Wembanyama said, via TalkBasket. “Especially that spin fadeaway over Rudy.”

The Spurs superstar worked with several legends last summer, including Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett.

The 115-108 win the Spurs’ first win at the Target Center since October 2022, as reported by ESPN’s Michael C. Wright.

Victor Wembanyama commented after the game how important the win was the Spurs’ confidence heading into Game 4, though there’s no reason to celebrate just yet.

“I think we haven’t done anything yet,” Wembanyama said. “I think we showed some strength during this game, some relentlessness that we’ve got to prove. We’ve still got to prove to ourselves that we can sustain that. Sometimes it feels like being in a more hostile environment, a harder environment, forces us to step up our game and be on our criteria even more.”

In three postseason games against Minnesota, Wemby is averaging 23.0 points, 15.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 6.3 blocks.
