The Golden State Warriors are going to be a team to watch closely as the NBA offseason gets underway. Kawhi Leonard continues popping up as a potential target for the team as it looks to push back into championship contention.

Over the last couple of years, the Warriors have been unable to be an NBA Finals contender. Stephen Curry’s career is beginning to wind down. There is a real sense of urgency in Golden State.

Heading into the 2026 NBA offseason, the Warriors are going to be open to big moves. They have been connected heavily to Giannis Antetokounmpo, but Leonard could be a more attainable target.

Keeping that in mind, a new take has been shared about the potential move.

Warriors Continue Popping Up in Kawhi Leonard Rumors

Newsweek’s Tyler Erzberger believes that a Leonard to Warriors move is more possible than many might think.

“This leads to the Golden State Warriors, who seem to be in the exact opposite mode of the Clippers,” Erzberger wrote. “They know the clock is winding down on Steph Curry’s career, and if it means blowing up the next decade, the Warriors seem willing to throw the dice if it means that their face of the franchise gets one or two last shots at the crown.”

He continued on, revealing some options Golden State has when it comes to pursuing Leonard.

“If the Clippers are willing to part ways with the fifth pick and Leonard, the Warriors would have to send over a recovering Jimmy Butler, along with a king’s ransom of first-round picks,” he wrote.

“While the Warriors don’t have a young player anywhere near SGA’s skill ceiling, they could swing for Moses Moody or Brandin Podziemski if they felt like it.”

Erzberger also mentioned that the Clippers would still be able to get another good young piece with the No. 11 overall pick from Golden State. It’s a move that could make sense for both parties.

Would Kawhi Leonard Make Golden State a Contender?

At 34 years old, Leonard is still one of the best players in the NBA. He is coming off of a big-time year with Los Angeles.

Throughout the course of the 2025-26 NBA season with the Clippers, Leonard played in 65 games. He averaged 27.9 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals, while also shooting 50.5 percent from the floor and 38.7 percent from three-point range.

Bringing in a player who could take over some of the No. 1 responsibilities from Curry would be ideal. Leonard would take a lot of pressure off of the superstar guard.

Whether or not the Warriors are planning to aggressively pursue Leonard remains to be seen. However, he’s exactly the kind of player who could put Golden State back on the map.
