Red Sox Roman Anthony Opens Up After Injury Scare vs Tigers

Red Sox star Roman Anthony is being predicted to win AL MVP this season

The Boston Red Sox needed Monday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers. Their season has been searching for traction for weeks, and any positive result carried extra weight in Detroit. They found one, rallying for a 5-4 win behind a five-run seventh inning and the first career victory for starter Payton Tolle.

But the win came with a complication.

Roman Anthony did not finish the game. The young outfielder hurt his right wrist on his first trip to the plate, and Boston did not keep him in the game much longer, leaving the Red Sox with an outcome that was difficult to feel fully good about.

Anthony Opens Up After the Game

The first warning came during Anthony’s opening at-bat, when a check swing left him needing attention at the plate. He stayed in long enough to finish the plate appearance and briefly return to the outfield, but the Red Sox did not push it much further.

Masataka Yoshida replaced him, and the concern shifted from the game to the tests that would follow.

Anthony opened up about what he felt afterward.

“Just took a swing and it didn’t feel good,” he said. “As I came back in and went to the batting cage to continue to swing, it just was painful.”

Anthony described the discomfort as being on the top of his hand. There was no obvious visual damage, which made the next step less about what could be seen and more about what the imaging shows.

“I’ve never really dealt with something like this,” Anthony said. “We’ll see what happens.”

What Comes Next for Anthony

Initial X-rays came back negative, which provided some early relief. But the Red Sox are not treating this as resolved.

Anthony’s next stop is Boston, where the Red Sox want a fuller picture from an MRI and their hand specialist. Further evaluation will determine whether he faces time on the injured list or can return quickly.

The Red Sox have already watched Anthony lose significant time to injury in his young career. That is what makes the next round of testing feel so important.

“Just took a swing and it didn’t feel good… never really dealt with something like this, never even had any pain in my hand before, so we’ll see what happens.”

What Anthony Means to Boston

The Red Sox are now 14-21 and still searching for a stable version of themselves. Anthony’s upside remains one of the clearest paths to something better.

He remains one of the few players in Boston’s lineup who changes the long-term conversation.

Monday’s win was genuine. Jarren Duran’s three-run homer changed the game. Payton Tolle gave Boston seven innings and eight strikeouts in his first win. Aroldis Chapman closed it out. There were real positives in Detroit.

Ultimately, Anthony’s wrist made them harder to hold onto.

Final Word for the Red Sox

The Red Sox found something to build on in Detroit. A first career win for Tolle. A Duran homer. A comeback. Real positives on a night that needed them.

Anthony’s wrist is the asterisk. The X-rays came back clean, and that matters. What the MRI shows will determine how much this moment lingers.

For now, Boston takes the win and waits.
