With the conclusion of the second round at the Truist Championship, Justin Thomas finished at seven-under par. That is two strokes back of leader Sung-Jae Im’s lead. Thomas currently sits in a tie for third after shooting a 68 on Friday.

So far at Quail Hollow, Thomas enjoys his best putting performance in 2026 (+1.35 per round). He credits much of that to fellow Ryder Cup teammate Cameron Young. Because of some poor putting this season, Thomas gave his Titleist representative one task: “Just give me Cam’s putter.”

So far in 2026, Thomas struggles on the greens, losing -0.43 strokes per round putting, the worst rate of his professional career. Thomas lost strokes putting at both The Masters (t-41) and the Cadillac Championship (t-23), but he gained strokes tee to green in all categories those weeks.

He commented on those struggles:

“I played really well [at the Cadillac Championship], I just putted horrifically. I had a very tough time on those greens. But I played really, really, really well at Augusta, and I just had zero to show for it. I drove it well, I felt like I hit a lot of good iron shots, just was kind of one of those weeks where I couldn’t get anything going, couldn’t make that putt or get that ball up-and-down that I needed to, either to keep momentum or get momentum. And that stuff just kind of – it wears.”

Justin Thomas’ Truist Championship Cameron Young Joke

GettyJustin Thomas joked about how much he was copying Cameron Young at the Truist Championship.

After his round at the Truist Championship, Thomas joked about how much he was copying Young.

He said, ““We had the exact same shoes on yesterday, and it’s like, ‘I promise I’m not trying to copy everything you do, but I’m maybe trying to copy everything you do. It’s a similar putter to what I used in the past, in terms of toe hang and what I felt. But yeah, for me, it’s just so hard to putt well if you don’t have confidence, and it’s so hard to have confidence unless you’re seeing it go in more often. So, I really, really worked hard Monday through Wednesday on my speed and start line and everything to where I just felt like I was in a better place and more freed up when I was putting.”

So far so good for Thomas given he sits in a great spot after 36 holes at the Truist Championship. Tomorrow, Thomas tees off in the second to last pairing with Alex Fitzpatrick.

Thomas Continues Injury Comeback in 2026

Getty Thomas recovered from a microdiscectomy, which delayed the start of his 2026 season.

The Truist Championship marks only Thomas’ seventh start of 2026 as his season was delayed due to a microdiscectomy. He experienced a sharp pain in his hips, causing the procedure. Thomas returned to TGL right before the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he missed cut. Since then, Thomas has made all of his cuts and showcases his ability from tee to green.

Per Data Golf, Thomas ranks in the 67th percentile in driving, the 82nd percentile in approach play, the 98th percentile around the greens, and the 63rd percentile in putting.

Regarding the rest of the season, Thomas said, “It’s a long season, it’s a lot of big tournaments ahead of me, so just keep trying to improve and get back in contention more often.”
