After eight straight losses, the Philadelphia Phillies now hold the title for the MLB’s longest losing streak, courtesy of a win from the New York Mets. As of April 21, the Mets were on a league high 12-game losing streak until they finally squeaked out a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
With the first win in 2 weeks, the Mets moved up into a tie for last place. They are now tied at the bottom with the Phillies, who have lost 8 in a row.

The Phillies, however, were not as lucky. They took on the red-hot Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, who handed them a 2-7 loss.
ESPN and MLB insider Jeff Passan, officially delegated the Phillies as the MLB’s longest losing streak holders via a tweet on X:
“The longest losing streak in baseball now belongs to the Philadelphia Phillies, who dropped their eighth straight and are tied with the Mets for the worst record in the National League at 8-16,” Passan wrote. “At -50, the Phillies also have the worst run differential in baseball by 15 runs.”
Ironically, the last time the Phillies won was on April 13 against the Chicago Cubs where they tacked on 13 runs. However, in the following games the Phillies have been unable to score more than four runs a game.

With a 96-66 record and trip to the postseason in 2025, the Philadelphia Phillies’ 2026 struggles are quite a surprise.
The Phillies are second-to-last in the MLB in batting average (.220), 27th in hits (177), and 82nd in runs. As Jeff Passan pointed out, the Phillies also have the worst run differential.
The Phillies recent opponents, the Chicago Cubs are currently a force to be reckoned with. They have the fourth best team ERA (3.39), and third best in hits allowed (176) and walks (69).
After the game, Rob Thomson spoke about what he claimed was one of the Phillies’ strong suits, the ability to draw walks, but made it clear that this kind of approach didn’t work on the Cubs.
“They throw a lot of strikes,” Thomson said. “Usually one of our strong suits is walking and putting ball in play and hitting home runs and chewing up pitches.”
The Phillies were able to knock down nine hits against the Cubs, but only scored two runs and left seven stranded. Shortstop Trea Turner added to the conversation surrounding the Phillies lack of offense explaining, “I feel like we get one guy on base and then he kind of dies for whatever reason. And that’s just not good enough. So maybe it’s a little bit of approach.”
Rob Thomson later explains that he knows the Phillies are a talented group and while the outcome is not great now, there’s still a lot of baseball left to play:
“Baseball’s a long season and we got a long way to go,” Thomson said. “And I think there’s a lot of frustration here. But at the same time, these guys know that we got a talented group. Not much is going right for us right now. And at times we’re not playing well. So we just got to stay after it and keep fighting. I mean, this is a talented group.”
Turner added to Thomson’s point saying, “Yeah, it sucks. Not having much fun in here, which is tough. This is a great game. We’re lucky to play it. And when you are expected to win and you want to win and it’s not happening, it’s tough and not fun, but that’s why we’re here.”

Hours before Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the Phillies placed catcher J.T. Realmuto on the 10-day injury list due to back spasms.
Phillies’ reporter Matt Gelb broke the news on X: “News: The Phillies are putting J.T. Realmuto on the injured list. Garrett Stubbs will return and split time at catcher with Rafael Marchán. Another blow to a team that desperately needs something to go right. ”
Rob Thomson did provide an encouraging update claiming that they expect him to be back at the 10-day mark.
Although probably for the best long-term, this proves no good for the Phillies as they look to break their losing streak against the Cubs on Thursday at 2:20 P.M. EST.
